Hard to believe Conor Riley would play tenure and salary over better set of tackles

With Conor Riley being called one of the best College OL coaches it’s hard to believe his strategy his reputation would be to play the Cowboy with tenure and salary over the better set of tackles . G is good with Tyler Smith Brock Hoffman and Bass as depth . Beebe reunited with his old K state coach should be even better 2nd yr C .

The question of having an offensive line that can dominate get the run game in high gear pass protect is the tackles. I don’t think either L or R tackle is settled I say throw Asim Richards Nathan Thomas last yrs 7th rounder in a four way competition with higher paid more heralded Guyton and Steele . Steele in particular is a concern .

Throw all four tackles in a four way competition off season camp preseason. Let the best two tackles start on Merit not salary not tenure .

One thing about MM bothered me he never benched anyone . OL in particular seems back burner in the draft / FA . Let’s see what’s in the building .
Normally, I would agree. Play the best 5 guys and the most effective at each position on the OL regardless of who was drafted where. But there is something to be said about giving guys opportunities to develop their skills.

For the first time is many years, I think what we will see in camp is open competition for all 5 starting positions along the Oline. Best 5 will start regardless of how they got here. This is why a fresh set of eyes and ideas with the hiring of the college coach. It's been needed for a very long time. Great hire. For the first time in a long while, there seems to be a plan. Now it's a matter of the fanbase to trust it.

I’m optimistic because the entire coaching staff changed except the TE position coach unbelievably.

I still would prefer Richards getting first crack at it so we don't have to move Smith. I'd have Guyton and Steele compete at RT and Richards "compete" with Smith at LT. I don't want to bounce Guyton back and forth, so unless it is determined that Steele is better, keep him at RT.

We need to have competition at each line position without investing a whole lot more resources into the line. The way I see it is:

LT Richards-Smith
LG Smith-Richards
C Beebe-Hoffman
RG Bass-Hoffman
RT Guyton-Steele

We don't know what we have in Thomas at the moment, and Waletzko needs to be put at LT instead of playing both sides, which I believe impeded his progress, along with injury.

I would also consider some veteran backups (Tyron Smith at LT if he's willing to come home on an incentive-laden deal and maybe Will Hernandez to join the RG competition). I assume that Martin will retire, but if he doesn't, we'll probably have to let him walk because he'll be in the position Tyron was in last year where he thinks he still has value as a starter.

Tyron Smith last I heard gave up 7 sacks as a Jet . Much rather see what Nathan Thomas brings to the table . Waletzco is strictly depth and that’s if he makes the 53 at all . Like Parcells used to say you can’t play from the trainers room .

Would like to see Dallas invest in a true guard with one of the comp picks , T seems covered .

Steele might be on his way out via trade or cut. I think he's not very hard to replace. For example, if we wanted to, we could just move Guyton to RT and start him. It's his natural position from college I believe. Just draft another Lt or move Smith out there permanently.

I am not a fan of Richards anchor so much like with Brockman I would prefer they ride the bench. Given the situation as it is now I get your point nonetheless.

My thought is only that interior linemen that can come and help are much easier to find than OT particularly LT. I don't know the tackle landscape this year but most years people are reaching and projecting just as we were last year.

I like moving Guyton over to RT see if the penalties cut down and he stays healthy . Put Thomas & Asim Richards in a battle at LT see if either can distinguish themselves in camp . Steele can be 2025 depth .

Given the shape of the D the thought of drafting another OL early is not appealing , comp picks come in handy .

Thomas is 6’4” 330 came out of a decent mid level college program at LA Lafayette. Asim Richards NC alum . You draft these guys it’s time to find out with this new seeming upgrade of an OL coach .

One perspective I have is that Riley was brought in to teach/develop the current group of OL already in house, but I can't see them not draft 1 more premium OL to throw to Riley n Adams...probably a OT.

iOL:
LG - Smith
C - Beebe/Hoffman
RG - Hoffman/Bass/Thomas

I could see the Staff adding a veteran FA to this group from ARZ in RG Hernandez (6'2 332) or C/LG Brown (6'3 320) for various reasons.

OT:
LT - Guyton/Richards
RT - Steele/Waletzko

If you take Steele away from this group via June 1 release, the Cowboys have serious work to do at OT. This is why I think an OT will be drafted in a premium round. Also, I look for a cheap UFA to be signed like Beachum or Edoga.

Cowboys need to learn how to be good on the OL without throwing so many resources into the group.

Exactly. Maybe Steele can be the swing tackle.

We can replace a RT real easy compared to left. Taking free agency and drafting away for sake of speculation, just move Richards or Guyton over to RT. Let them beat out Steele if they can. Waletzko is getting cut more than likely. Guyton will never be a top flight Lt I'm afraid. So let's see if he can start on the right side.Maybe Richards can be the swing and let's see if we can trade Steele for a pick.

Left to right: Smith Beebe Hoffman Bass/Thomas then Guyton. Make Richards the swing

Edoga & Waletzco cannot stay healthy . Time to look elsewhere .

If Smith kicks out to LT then they have to find a starter at RG outside the building, imo. You trust Guyton?

True, but Edoga is decent when healthy and called to action. I think the new coaches will target some replacements.
