Mavs Trade Luka to Lakers

First of all… Shaq probably not the best example. LOL. Dude let it go pretty quickly, same as Luka, and won a lot of rings.

As a lifelong Spurs fan, I remember watching Tim Duncan and wondering why he wasn’t as ripped as David Robinson, yet he just performed better in the clutch and brought a dynasty with him.

Joker has that same flabby Eastern Euro look but tears it up and has one ring already.

So when I wondered if Luka wasn’t taking his training as serious, I didn’t put too much into the looks and weight gain. I don’t think anyone on the Mavs would be dumb enough to air out trash on him, can only assume that whatever they saw behind the scenes set off a lot of max contract alarm bells.

Seems like in the NBA you’re more screwed than any other pro sport if you give a huge contract to the wrong person. Although NFL QBs are quickly matching it.

Things just keep getting worse for the Mavs....10 days ago, I just kept thinking, they are gonna get healthy and make a run. This team was primed to do so with Luka coming back

Then out of the blue, they trade a 25 yr old top 3 player in the world to the freaking Lakers of all teams.

Now, we have an injury list that consist of:

Lively
Gafford
PJ
AD
Martin

You have an ownership and GM who are clueless in what the fans are feeling right now
They are literally kicking those fans out who protest the moves they have made
A nitwit goof ball owner, who opens his mouth and makes it worse by saying Shaq was the model example of commitment and not the guy who has a statue out in front of the arena
You have the MSM sports world now acting like Luka is the next face of the NBA, when he's been doing this in Dallas the entire time and was already there. The ooo's and ahhhs is sickening from them....when the jersey changed colors.
Appears Nico is going to go all in over the summer and trade picks and Gafford/PJ/Klay for an aging KD to make a run at a title.
That basically would put them in a tailspin with no future draft picks available for a long time...and a very old aging/inj roster

Dang...this all happened so freaking fast.
FUNico

Which is why you don't trade a young superstar for an oft injured 31 year old center. Rico needs to lose his job and soon.

There were reports Cuban tried to stop the trade . I guess they went over his head . Can’t stand Cuban nice to see he’s a figurehead with a court side seat .

Cuban knows basketball. This new owner is a basketball moron.

Cuban has owned the Mavs 24 yrs with one Championship. Jerry has a better batting average . The Oilmen who own the Rangers have won one WS far less time . Only the Canadian who bought the hockey Stars has been worst at winning having no champs .

Dumont the new Co Owner said Luka was an alcoholic in so many words and had to go .

The only possible way this trade ends up worst is if the Lakers had insisted the Maxs take “ Bronny “ the prodigy off there hands .

I call BS. The man said repeatedly he only talked to one team. He even thanked Pelinka for keeping the deal silent. This implies he shopped Luka. If he shopped Luka the rumor would have leaked. If had high aspirations of Giannis or Edwards (I don't blame the Timberwolves for saying no) and settled for the glass man, he‘s still an idiot. When you want to trade your are generational talent away and can’t get another super star you don’t settle for a glass man and a first round pick. You get the biggest haul u can and start over.

You think the Cuban era was bad? look at the team history previous to him. Cuban was a godsend. They just played in an NBA finals and had a nice run with Dirk. Dallas may be a great destination for football players but that luster doesn't carry over to basketball. In the NBA , Dallas is a second choice destination. Guys like Lebron and Shaq are never choosing cities like Dallas when they get a chance to move. If you don't like Cuban , you are really going to hate what's coming. This new ownership is far worse.

24 yrs one title . That seems to be the measuring stick Jerry is under .

It's not just that

I'm not knocking Dirk, but I don't think people realize how much the league is dominated by a handful of players.

Out of the 45 championships won between 1980 and 2024

Only 6 were won without one of the following players: Kareem (6x time MVP), Magic (3x MVP), Bird (3x MVP), Moses Malone (3x MVP), Jordan (5x MVP), Hakeem (1x MVP), Duncan (2x MVP), Shaq (1x MVP), Kobe (1x MVP), Lebron (4x MVP), Steph (2x MVP), Jokic (3x MVP)

Everyone on that list was a multi time winner except Hakeem, Shaq and Kobe and I think most people agree that their greatness exceeds the number of MVPs they won

Dirk really isn't in the conversation with these guys...you could argue he's the best of the next tier of guys but winning one with him and that team was honestly an over achievement

Regarding the players you mentioned, you’re overlooking their hall of fame teammates. Malone had Julius Erving. Kareem and Magic Johnson played on the same team with Michael Cooper. Bird played on a super team with Parish, McHale, Johnson, and the last two years of Bill Walton (I’m certain I’m missing some players here). Jordan won championships with Scottie Pippen, Rodman, and Toni Kukoc. Kobe Bryant had Shaquille O’Neal for most of his championships. He also won rings with Paul Gasol. When Shaq left LA he won one with Wade. LeBron James had a super team in Miami with Wade and Bosh, won one with a younger Kyrie Irving in Cleveland, and then got another championship with Anthony Davis during the NBA COVID bubble. Duncan had Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and David Robinson for his championships. Stephen Curry had a healthy Thompson, Green, and Durant.

On the other hand, Dirk Nowitzki never had a supporting cast like the players you mentioned. The greatest player Dirk played with was Steve Nash (who Cuban famously let walk). Dirk won his championship with an aging Jason Kidd and Shawn Marion. Jason Terry was probably the second-best player on the team. If you put Dirk on the Lakers or any of the teams above, how would you judge him then?

Dirk is one of the best players of all time. We can say what he didn’t do but what we also have to be mindful that no one took the team he had and won a SB. He literally went into every round as the under dog and won. Pure dominance. Dirk for sure belongs in the same convo as Duncan and Olajuwon.
