There is an old saying in the NFL: Championships can be won or lost in the off-season. We saw that last season with the mystifyingly bad off-season we witnessed with our Cowboys vs the aggressive, targeted moves of the egirls. Before you can have a great off-season you must have a great plan.

The first step the Cowboys need to do this off-season is decide what kind of team they are trying to build. In fantasy football the focus is acquiring the best skill position players available. In real football it’s all about knowing what kind of team you want to build. You must have outstanding player talent evaluation of your current roster and what kind of talent is needed to fill the holes you have.

So what kind of team are we supposed to be building?
  • Is this supposed to be a finesse/speed team on both sides of the ball?
  • Is it supposed to be a smash-mouth physical team that can run the ball and stop the run?
Those are just two simple examples at both ends of the spectrum. Obviously there are many more styles. Honestly, I don’t know what kind of team our FO has been trying to build. That must be established in order to have a great draft and FA period.

One of the only good things about having multiple holes in your roster is there will be very good players available at multiple positions in the draft and FA. I am confident we can grab some talent.

But if we don’t know what kind of team we are building, how can we match talent to need? A great off-season plan starts right there.

Your selections do not include a defineable rebuild and how that should affect selections and team dynamics.

Jerral has a plan. Will anyone on this board be happy with it?

If history is a guide, he'll try to rebuild with draft picks and churn the bottom of the roster with low-cost FA's hoping to find a nugget.
I still wonder what kind of team we are trying to build. If there’s a plan it isn’t obvious yet.

This FO seemed to understand what they needed 2013-14 when they built a great OL around Romo. It seemed like they finally awakened to the fact that almost no QB can carry a team without a strong running game. Hopefully that revelation is back.

I do not think Jerral's plan is that focused. I think he will get the "best he can" and that will push us in a direction.

Not gonna happen

The Joneses are football idiots and have no philosophy of team building
They are purely reactionary
That is why we are only now trying to build a run game, because running teams are having success

We've had that problem since Tuna left. And still do. I don't see it going away. Sure, we fall into a great OL when our guy is gone and we take players such as Zach, or Fredbeard when Romo had to hold Jerry hostage to make him take OL. But mostly, we take gazelles for the OL, often injured gazelles. Hasn't worked yet, but we're still doing it.

The best success was when we had a good running game. However, that takes a good OL and a good RB. No, not just any RB will do. We've tried that several times and it doesn't work. Must have quality at both.

There is no identity or philosophy, well….not a good one anyways. They sign their own whether they are worth it or not then dumpster dive to just fill in the holes because they have no idea how to finagle the cap and contracts. Outside in is not the way to build a Super Bowl team.

Don't forget, Romo forced that on them. After the ole' experience of Costa at Center, Romo agreed to a contract renegotiation only if Jerry would fix the Center position. And then we fell into Zach Martin because the guy we really wanted was gone.

When Jerry fixes a position, it's generally an accident.

there is only one step 1 that will improve this team significantly, and that's Jerry Jones stepping down as the GM....none of the other stuff matters.

Certainly not the second on DEF. The Jones's are enamoured with 'quick twitch' DT's and obsessed with the 3T position.

Stop it, Bob. You are making too much sense.

The Cowboys clearly have no plan. Every move is made independently of every other move. Ask Jerry what kind of team he wants and he will talk about paying Dak $60 million. What's the plan? Pay Dak. Done. What else is necessary?

Then Jerry gave Dak so much money it kind of drive them to be a team that relies on the QB to win games. Will it work? Of course not.

What the Cowboys should do is to build a stout defense. Build a strong running game. Then rely less on Dak, not more. Do they want to be physical? Yes, because physical teams win in January and February. But under Jerry, they will never be a physical team because he spend 75% of his CAP dollars on offense and 25% on defense. Jerry does not sign lunch pail type football players. He signs names

This offseason is going to tell us so much about Jerry and the Cowboys management. The Eagles have set the bar. Jerry needs to prove he wants to reach it.

Unfortunately, it seems the FO has no clue. On offense the assistant coaching hires suggest a more run first offense. Other than that, who the hell knows?

It definitely feels to me like the organization believes that they need to get more physical.

I expect a concerted effort to improve both the offensive and defensive lines.

I think improvement on the offensive line is expected more from coaching than personnel. They have invested in young talent there and likely want to develop them.

On the defensive line, I think they realize that they haven’t invested enough and have missed to some extent in when they did invest.

I think defensive line will see the bigger turnover of personnel and likely more investment of draft and free agency resources.

This is how I see it as well.

Eberflus will build a defense that is better at stopping the run. The hiring of Schottenheimer and the assistant coaches that we have point to us trying to go back to a run oriented team with play action passing, something that better suits Prescott especially at this stage where he is less of an option as a runner. He pretty much is a pocket passer now.

I do think we have some decent talent on the OL, they are just young and need someone that develops them. I do think we need to sign one starting level guy and draft one in the first few rounds. Same thing on the DL, need at least one starting level guy and a high draft pick.

Well, we made the Arizona OL coach the OC. So, why do that if the plan isn't to run the ball.......a lot. I think even our dimwitted front office has figured out that Dak is never going to get them to a Super Bowl with his arm. I'm hoping we become a smash mouth running team with a stout defense. We have a looong way to go on the defensive side of the ball.

The draft sets up to where they can draft 2 dtackles and 2 running backs. They can for sure draft at least 1 running back and sign an undrafted runner or draft 2 and still sign an undrafted runner. It also looks like Nick Bolton would be a good free agent linebacker that they could and should get.
