The Cowboys need to get back to a power-running game

Power running game tends to work best with a QB that has the ability to make you pay for stacking the box with defenders.

I want to be optimistic and then the reality of beating 4 straight playoff teams with this QB brings me back to earth.
It ain't happening regardless of playcaller, run support or excellent defense.

Harsh reality.

Emmitt had such great strength, balance, vision, patience and cutting ability. I still believe he is vastly underrated when people talk about great RBs in NFL history, even underrated by lots of Cowboys’ fans.
ALL facts!!

Exactly! Too many people are fooled into thinking Prescott isn't the weak link. He plays like Ryan Leaf once they make the playoffs. Jerry really screwed the team by signing that trash. Can't even cut him!

Draft Jeanty. Sign Evan Brown to play center. Kick Beebe to guard. Run toss left and toss right with Tyler Smith and Cooper Beebe pulling
Draft DL/OL in the first three rounds, RB in the fourth. Did you not learn anything from watching the SB? The Cowboys are not close to being a contender, they must build a solid foundation. Drafting an RB in round one, is not it.

I have to disagree with that and I'll tell you why. If you look back at the Dallas Cowboys history, everytime they won the superbowl, they had good runners. In the their first superbowl against the the Baltimore Baitimore Colts in superbowl V, they had Calvin Hill, Duane Thomas, and Walt Garrison. Now,the Cowboys got some bad calls that cost them that game. Next superbowl, they played in which was Supernowl VI, the won their 1st superbowl. In superbowl XII, they had Tony Dorsett and won. When Emmitt was there they won 3 superbowls and probably would have won more if Jerry hadn't messed the whole thing up. It doesn't hurt to have a good running game.

Emmitt was a different beast. Huge thighs, low base, amazing vision, great acceleration.

If he had top flight speed…
...that 18,355 probably would've been over 20K. And, he would've had more than 1 200 yard game.

The 1972 Dallas Cowboys offensive line included Rayfield Wright (All-Pro), John Niland(Pro Bowler), Ralph Neely (Pro Bowler), and Forrest Gregg (HOFer).

Agreed.

Build the trenches on both sides. Establish an effective power running game and keep dak to 25 attempts.

I'm optimistic these new OL coaches will revamp the running game and we will see a big difference between this year and past years.

Jerry Jones has a history of disrespecting the RB position. He has always felt that as long as you have a strong O-line then you can just put anybody in there.

How many times does he have to prove this?

"Emmitt Smith is a luxury and not a necessity" - Jerry Jones, 1993

"The biggest threat probably to DeMarco's stats is Joseph Randle.......But make no mistake about it, (Randle) can be effective out there, too." - Jerry Jones, 2015

“He’s a violent runner. He runs with great skill… I’m so proud for him. He’s finally put together the running back he can be. He’s outstanding. It just really gives us a 1-2 punch in there.” - Jerry Jones, 2024

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Jerry ignored the position again in the draft and signed some veteran free agent that ends up on the bubble before the first preseason game.

Jeanty seems like the go to pick, but if Banks OL drops to the Cowboys somehow then decisions must be made.

They need to go either full on offense for first 3 picks and be the Bengals or go deep on defense and hope OL shines next year.

It’s definitely a passing league now. I would like to see the power running game too. I just wonder if the OL and RBs could stay healthy running the ball 40 times a game. I think you would need 4 RBs, probably two great all purpose backs, a goal line and 3rd down back. You’d need extra OL on hand too. I supposed you’d also need 3 good TEs and also a #1 WR for those play actions.

Personally I like those 3-0 games and defense seems to go along with a ball control offense.

To get all those players you’d likely have to go with a 10m a year QB and spend the leftover 50M a year on OL and RBs. I wish a team would try it, Baltimore seems to come close with Jackson and Derrick Henry, but I think the plan would be not to have an elite QB. Also there aren’t many Henrys so maybe you’re talking about having the best RB in the league then to keep him healthy you would want to keep him at 15 to 20 carries a game….it seems like a tall order.

I'd like to target Jeanty in draft but if off the board then take WR like Luther from Missou. Gotta have more than just CeeDee and Ferguson. Just so many problems for the team to fix it seems if no Jeanty.

There are always some good short term RBs in FA to complement a later round RB. Some are injury risks but I'd still take a shot at a guy like Chubb who may be more closer to what he was being another year recovered from his big injury in 23. He may come cheap for a prove it year.

Najee Harris is UFA
Chubb - UFA
Javonte williams - UFA
Mason RFA
Elijah Mitchell - UFA
Dobbin - UFA
Trade for one of those guys in Seattle (Charb or Walker) or D. Pierce in Houston

Agreed. Does drive me nuts when the "experts" say this QB needs a running game. Any smart team should want a strong run game.
