And that second one will be a wasted pick just like Michael Jackson was last year. We have struggled with evaluating DB talent for years. We even trade the ones that can play for backup guards. Sign a proven free agent first and then let the draft come to you instead of forcing a pick.

Eh I understand the hit or miss nature of our DB selections but using a 5th round pick who got signed off our PS to another roster is strange lol. How many 5th round CB’s are impactful starters lol?

Using Awuzie when there was some other corners available who have been better would make more sense lol, any pick outside the top 60 is throwing darts

I don't get this CB talk. Byron Jones is leaving. I think that's a done deal. And it seems like Dallas isn't even that interested in keeping him. So why would the Cowboys let him go if they thought it would create such a huge problem for the team? The Cowboys can sign Anthony Brown and draft a couple of guys on day 3 for depth. Problem solved.

The biggest problem on this defense is still DT. Not only were they weak there in 2019, but Collins, Hyder, Bennett and Covington are all free agents. Crawford is coming back from two hip surgeries and he is overpaid. If they sign brown, they have 3 serviceable CBs. They have no DTs but we are going to talk about using one of our first 2 picks for a CB? If CB is such a big problem, then sign Jones and fix it.

The Cowboys needs DTs and they need at least one who can dominate his position. Every Cowboys championship team had at least one dominant DT going all the way back to Bob Lilly. To me, CB is a lesser problem than TE and safety.

The whole conversation around drafting another CB is stupid. You don't replace Byron Jones with a rookie, because that rookie is going to be worse - unless it's Okudah. If they let Byron walk, there's no point in drafting one, because you aren't going to get one much better than Brown/Chido.

The only value in letting Byron walk is cap savings, in which case, you're better off just going with a CB off hte street than giving one a first-round salary.

Unless the Cowboys sign a FA to replace Jones, then they have to draft a CB at 17 or 51.

I can easily see the Cowboys drafting 2 CB's this year with them getting another on day 3.

Depending on how they feel about Lewis, I could see them waiting until the third round. I'm not sure

I'd prefer that we bring Jones back if we're going to have to turn around and spend a first or second to replace him. We don't need to use those picks to tread water.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you because we do need to add another corner or two no matter what, but as Michael Jackson showed last year, it's hit and miss, especially in those later rounds.

If we let both Jones and Brown walk as free agents, then we've got to get at least a nickel corner in FA or spend a premium pick on the position. If we keep either Brown or Jones, we can probably roll the dice the the later rounds this year and hope at least one of those picks turns out to be at least on Brown's level instead of Jackson's.

I would take a CB in top 3 rnds if possible
This draft is loaded at WR so I expect a WR at some point
I wouldn’t take a CB late unless someone really fell but I wouldn’t mind if there is a guy there
To me a 7th rnd pick generally is a wasted pick but this year we can get a day one player by looking kicker or punter there
There are a few kickers and punters worth drafting in this class and could make a very late pick be an impact player
One thing for sure, we have more needs than picks so FA is gonna be huge this year

im not giving up on Awuzie and Lewis but last yr wasn't as strong as i had hoped for from either.

If we re-sign Jones, then I don't think taking a CB in the top three rounds is necessary considering our needs at DT, S and possibly TE. I agree that it depends on what we do in FA, but if the Joneses continue to follow the pattern they've used the past few years, I don't think we can expect much more there than to sign our own.

I don't like the idea of taking something that was kind of a position of strength and letting it be weakened only to have to strengthen it again. I know that's how it all works to some extent, but I would do everything reasonable to prevent it.

We have failed over and over again to address safety and DT with premium picks (I know we took at shot with Hill last year, but he was more prospect than proven stud), and our defense has remained so-so. While I don't think having a stud DT and S is the only way to succeed, I'd like to see us hold on to what was actually good about this defense and attack what was bad.

I'd like for us to be in a position to where we spend a third-rounder at most on CB unless there is just a player we can't pass up.

Like most of Dallas' players, he won't make more than $10 million his first year. Then, his second year will be bigger, but will have a restructure built in that could knock that year way down.

Use Ezekiel Elliott's contract as an example. Dallas is paying him $90 million over six years, but he got just $6.3 million last year and is scheduled to make $10.9 this year. After that, it continues going up, but Dallas could restructure if it wants to depending on production and health. That's part of the reason the last couple of years have no guaranteed money.
