Mahomes will be the salary setter.
The price for qb's in general are only going to continue to balloon. This is an important thing to realize. The market for qb's just about all of them, is only continuing to rise.

Two years ago the Falcons signed Ryan to an extension that paid him $30M per season. This outraged people. No way Ryan could be worth that especially when he just lost to Philly IN Philly on 4th & goal by overthrowing his receiver which punched a ticket for the Egals 3rd trip to the Superbowl.

Leary was a Cowboy until 2017 and was let go because of his knee condition.

Ware wouldn't take a pay cut.
Ware was essentially a cap cut. True, he wouldn't take a cut which made him too expensive. Leary left for free agency. We couldn't afford to keep him. He was not released due to a knee condition.

I forgot about Demarco Murray. Maybe with more cap space they offer him an extension and he never visits another team.

Ok ok. He wasn't resigned because of his degenerative left knee condition. Either way he was a former Cowboy after '17 because the Cowboys wouldn't ever consider matching any offer he got. Which ended up being a very good decision for them.

It is a great question. Remember, many of these Dak haters scream that Dak was handed the most talented team ever assembled in 2016. Then they say if we give Dak a franchise QB contract we will not be able to assemble a team around Dak...

It is inherently contradictory. How was Dak given the most talented team ever assembled...if the Cowboys still had Romo's massive contract on the books?

Murray who left the Cowboys and signed a 5 year deal with the eagles only lasted there for 1 season before they realized they could get along without him because of the same reason the Cowboys let him go because he couldn't hang onto the ball and sent him off to the titans. So he went to the titans and his first year he did pretty good but that same problem showed up at the end of the season and he started to fumble once again. The next year was his last and after being released he retired because he got no offers from any teams. So Murray who was responsible for the Cowboys losing against the packers in the divisional round in 2014 with 2 fumbles lost in the packers red zone and who lead the league in fumbles you wonder if the Cowboys had more cap space they would have offered more - what they offered him was more than what he was worth and the rest of his career bore that out.

DeMarco Murray - 1.911 touches and 18 fumbles - 0.94% fumble rate
Zeke Elliott - 1,358 touches and 15 fumbles - 1.1% fumble rate

Murray only fumbled once against GB in the 2014 playoff game. Romo fumbled 2 times.

Philly didn’t cut Murray because of fumbles. He wasn’t a scheme fit.

Philly didn't cut him they traded him to the titans for a 4th round pick and after just 2 seasons they cut him and no team made an offer for him so he retired.

Murray fumbled twice but only lost the ball once. The other fumble was on 3rd down and the Cowboys lost yardage and had to settle for a field goal. BTW the 2 fumbles Romo had were recovered by the Cowboys and neither were in the packers red zone. Also Murray had lost 6 fumbles in 2014 season and 1 in the previous 3 seasons so that left 11 fumbles over the last 3 seasons. 4 in the last 5 games of that one season in philly, 4 in the first season with the titans and 3 in the second as a part time back his last season. He earned the reputation of a fumbler and that is why he got no offers after getting cut by the titans. Lastly I didn't mention Elliott even though I'm aware of his fumbling because the Cowboys now don't show a lot of concern about it. I do think in privacy they have talked to him about it. It doesn't change the facts on why the Cowboys wouldn't offer more for Murray and why they said their concerns were in not offering more.

Murray fumbled once against the Packers. Romo fumbled twice and was the one who fumbled the ball om 3rd down causing the FG attempt that Bailey missed and then had blocked on the redo.

Murray did go through a string of games where he developed a perception of being a fumbled and once a perception is created is is damn near impossible to get rid of the label. An example is Romo being a choker. He choked several times early in his career and never could shake the label, despite evidence to the contrary.

But, thanks for this. I realize just how poorly Zeke is at holding onto the ball. Butterfingers needs to improve because he is worse than Murray and he may have cost us the Rams playoff game because he fumbled in the red zone. :muttley:

1. Yes we absolutely hit a wall with adding talent once Romo was paid.

2. We don't yet know who we will add and lose for sure.

3. We do know this. Most good teams that pay a QB top dollar also don't have to pay top dollar for most of their OL, Wr, RB, to make the QB function. Guys like Brees, Brady, Rodgers, wilson etc skimp on offense cause those guys can help over come a lack of talent while the team builds defense.

If you have a top 5 QB like a Rogers or Brady you pay him because he can win games on his own tallent. Dak is hardly one of these and will never win a SB just like Romo. If you (Jerry) pay Dak that money, expect to ex[eroemce another decade of just losing out on the SB. That's the way it is.

We aren’t winning the SB with or without paying Dak.

Please all you Dak Hater's I kindly ask you answer 2 questions

1. Which players did we lose to Free Agency because of Tony Romo's Market Value setting contract?

2. Which players on the roster will we lose that we would have wanted to keep if we sign Dak to Market Value Contract.

Thank you!

Patrick Mahomes on rookie contract and KC was allowed to build around him. End results was a Super Bowl victory.

Why does Romo's name keep coming up? I've never seen an ex-player get mentioned so much. Hint, hint people Romo's past has nothing to do with Dak's future.

Why, because most SB teams don't go shopping for winning/SB QB's in the bargain basement trashbin. Dak and Romo were failures at QB for a reason and those reasons will continue to keep the Cowboys in the middle of the pack for years to come. Sad, but true!

Exactly!, In as much as I was a Romo supporter, ( but evidently some here were not), I am amazed that 80 percent of the times Romo is brought up its being done by the Pro Dakota-Never Romo crowd. Romo is dead and buried and conjuring up his ghost only shows that he is still in many heads here.

Dak is our QB and the sooner some get that in there collective heads; the better..................................................if that little ole contract is ever signed.

Day 50 since the regular season ended and No Contract

Ware was cut because he refused to renegotiate a team friendly deal, unlike the other highly paid Cowboys like Romo and Witten. Jerry tried to work with Ware so he could remain a Cowboy, he refused. It wasn't Romo's contract that got Ware cut, it was his own unwillingness to work with Jerry on a team friendly deal.
Worked out pretty well for Ware
