Your better than that sorry little post. I already said he was a very talented QB, he was just thin skinned and couldn't take the critisism.
In 64 or 65 Tom benched Don and was rotating Jerry Rhome and Craig Morton, both rookies and the team went to hell because of it. Don was in Landry's doghouse and some players said that was the point at which Don knew that Landry would dump him. Everybody agreed that period affected Don.
The players agreed Don was beat up. He had played with a broken nose, broken fingers, etc. Don Talbert had a picture taken after the game he described Don's nose as so big you couldn't see his eyes. Everybody knew the line was just not that good. One season he played every game, preseason to the final, injured. They started their own stat "Yards Lost Trying to Survive."
Bob Lilly said they just wanted Landry to make a decision.
Then after one heartbreaking loss Landry came thanking them and telling them how much he appreciated them. Then he announced he probably would be gone the following year. And started crying.
Then he tossed and turned for two days, as he writes in his book, and named Don the starter for the last 7 games. They won 5 of the 7.
The press roasted Don as well in that period. Half the team wanted to beat Gary Cartwright's butt after a loss to Cleveland when he wrote, "Outlined against the gray November sky the Four Horsemen rode again Sunday. You know them; pestilence, famine, death, and Meredith."
Most underappreciated QB likely ever to play in the NFL.
