The Cowboys restructured the contracts of Ezekiel Elliott and La’el Collins, but gained cap room only from the Collins’ move, opening up $4 million in space by turning $5 million of his 2020 base salary into signing bonus.

Why Zeke?
Hopefully they kept intact the trapdoor they built into the deal so we can affordably part ways with him years early if he hits the wall like almost every RB does.

If the restructure robs us of that flexibility, that's a stone-cold bad trade-off.

Yea, and it's interesting in that his base this year was relatively small. For example next year his base is over 9mil and in 2022 it peaks at 12.4mil*.
Seems with this restructure, it will have a minor effect on his future cap hits/potential dead cap hits.

*While still carrying potential dead cap.

Where have you been the last 3 to 4 years? The Joneses usually go on vacation about this time...sidelines is an understatement.

I gather your expecting a flurry, we'll see. Quinn, Cobb n Lee is about all they'll do before signing guys on the cheap.
I gather you’re expecting every team to just rush out and spend every possible penny willy nilly?

So far it’s going like most everyone expected. Tag Dak, sign Cooper, Jones walks.

If you had hoped for the Cowboys, with the three #1 free agents in the league at QB, WR and CB to go out and blow 120 million on someone else’s free agents then you had some really unrealistic expectations.

the free agents we were shopping for this off season were our own and we could only afford two of the three.

we will have to address the other side of the ball in the draft.

It’s just math.

Not really, over 20 players from the 53 man roster hit the open market today... so far we’ve signed Cooper, Jarwin, and tagged Dak. There’s A LOT of holes to fill and not a lot of cap room to fill them.

Dak’s whole franchise tag money (roughly $33m) counts towards the cap this year, so that handicaps us.
Plus don't we need to set aside Draft money?

When does that have to be ponied up?

Sure, one of the reasons they built the deal the way they did was to have an option to get out relatively cheaply after four years.

The other reason was to prepare for the possibility that they would need to push some of Zeke’s money around in a restructure to give them cap flexibility to make other moves.

Goes back to my theory that Jerry is signing like crazy because he anticipates big increases to the cap in coming years. So you clear cap space this year to get more contracts signed.

Big tell will be if they push money out on Smith.

I mean if it functions like most restructures he converted most of this years salary into signing bonus spread out evenly over his contract thus adding dead money onto the later half of the year so while it does not change the cap savings for the later years, but it will incur some more dead money after.

I don't expect them to spend big money on outside FAs that's why I wondered about doing the restructures now. I figured they had enough cap to sign their own without doing restructures at the moment.
