Dallas Cowboys: Will Chidobe Awuzie make a name for himself in 2020?

...He has had a good track record so far, improving every season for three consecutive years. While playing only 30 percent of the defensive snaps in his rookie season, Awuzie defended seven passes and made 25 tackles while intercepting one pass.

The following season, his snaps jumped up to 86 percent. That along with starts in 14 of 15 games played. The passes defended increased to 11, tackles up to 71, and yet again intercepted one pass.

The 2019 season saw 16 starts with 95 percent of defensive snaps. The corner’s best season yet saw him defend 14 passes and make 79 tackles, while yet again intercepting one pass. He also managed to force one fumble, make one tackle for a loss, and hit the opposing quarterback once...

Our CBs have all been disappointing with interceptions. The common denominator was they all played in the same scheme that did not have them play aggressive. Let's see how they play this year. Expect a dramatic change.

Of the eight who can become unrestricted free agents, Awuzie, Lewis and Woods would be at the top of the list. They have much to prove and the most to gain.

Awuzie, a second-round pick in 2017, has started 36 of 41 games and has had one interception in each of his first three seasons. He struggled down the stretch in 2019 and was replaced in the base defense in the biggest game of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Lewis, a third-round pick in 2017, has started 13 of 46 games, spending most of his time as the team's slot corner. He has four interceptions and has made big plays in key games despite less playing time than Awuzie.

Woods, a sixth-rounder in 2017, has started 33 of 45 games, including all 29 he has played over the past two seasons. He has five interceptions.

But was it just scheme,, hard to play aggressive as a CB, when the supporting cast at safety was marginal at best.
Better safeties will result in more turnovers.

I think Dallas should work on an extension this offseason with Chidobe.

He is not nearly as bad as this forum would have you believe. He’s a pretty good player and I’m fine with him as our #2 corner.

If he fits the new scheme then Dallas needs to try and get ahead of this and get him signed.

Who would you want as the #1 corner?

Draft or trade.

There is currently not a true #1 on this roster.

I think all of our current guys can cover and if the pass rush is good then we’d be fine with what we have but we don’t have a guy like Byron Jones on this roster right now and we need that.

He's a good corner. No doubt about that.

But is "good" enough, playing QBs like Brees, etc? After 3 years, just by his "development" he's not likely to make a big leap. Now can a new defensive scheme help with that? Maybe, but scheme accounts for just so much, he has to have both mental and physical attributes for the scheme to make him into a top corner.

I'd still hedge my bet by drafting a corner either in the 1st or 2nd round, depending on who's available at 17. If all the highly rated DEs are gone by 17, go with the CB, and vice versa.

Both are big needs on this team, and at 17 there will be a highly rated one available, a lot of mocks show teams going heavy at receiver, if both a DE and CB are available, might as well flip a coin as to who you pick...

So Awuzie gets an INT about every 12 games, Lewis gets one every 3 games & Woods about every 6-7 games. That comes out to around 9-10 INTs per season, if they can maintain their averages.

I've heard both praise & digs for Lewis, so maybe that's not a good way to project what they'll do.

IF he ever turns around to the locate the ball he might be a really good corner. One game last year the ball hit him square in the numbers....

Hopefully new coaching staff can fix some of this otherwise its not looking good

It was just yesterday I was being told I was wrong about him, cause cause cause it took such a perfect throw to beat him. Every time. A perfect throw. He is not player and has never been. I will hold out slight hope a new staff can get him to you know actually look for the ball for once in his life. If we draft a corner high, he’s the one going to the bench

3. CB Jeff Okudah: Cowboys
While there should still be some very good cornerbacks available with the 17th overall pick, the Cowboys, who lost cornerback Byron Jones last month in free agency, should looking into the possibility of trading up to acquire Okudah, who is unanimously considered the best defensive back in the draft. Along with displaying an elite skill set during his time at Ohio State, Okudah also plays with a swagger that would surely be welcomed in Dallas and by the team's rabid fan base.

Okudah, whose ability has been compared to Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey, studies all of the NFL's elite corners. He said that he specifically watches tape of Patrick Peterson and Stephon Gilmore, the league's reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

"I'll never get complacent because I feel like there's always a constant chase," Okudah said during a recent appearance on NFL Network. "I'm chasing some of the great corners in the game right now, and there's corners that are chasing me. I feel like, if you understand the constant chase, you'll always be good on the field."

One potential trade partner for the Cowboys could be the Panthers, who own the seventh overall pick but are likely open to moving back and acquiring extra draft capital.
