Much rather get my impact player at 17 (do the math, one or two will be there) and then, if I'm that in love with Ruiz, trade back up into late 1st (5th year option) and get him. Me personally, think he can be had in mid-to-early 2nd.

I like Ruiz a lot but if he's the best player we get out of this draft then we are stupid.

Some have the center from Temple rated higher than Ruiz. I don’t think he’s better but probably can be had in 3rd round

I agree! I'm firmly in the camp of going Defense heavy to a fault. Look at the teams that end up winning championships, the most important thing is defense and our is severely lacking.
As far as I'm concerned if our offense takes another jump even with looney will be more than good. Lets also remind ourselves that Prescott may take another jump up after another off season.
I know we talk about getting the best player on the board, and I think that holds true for first round, but after that I say go ultra heavy on Dt's and CB's... Bottom line is it's time to go heavy on defense for a change and let the chips fall where they may.
I agree they need help every where on defense. I'd love a pass rusher or pocket collapser. Unfortunately in 2018 without Frederick the sack total increased by double. Worse a lot of that came up the middle. No QB deals with pressure up the middle particularly well.

Good article on the kid. Driven and smart. I wouldn’t go this route but like the guy

https://www.latimes.com/sports/stor...uiz-is-still-at-center-of-his-nfl-draft-dream

“At Michigan, I was always in my playbook, always studying the offense,” Ruiz said. “I just have a thing for football. That’s where I think I stand out with these interviews, because I just know so much about football and I love football.”

Ruiz is projected as a borderline first-round pick entering the draft, but he’s confident he should be picked on the first day.

“Because if you look at the film, if you look at how I dominate people, if you look at my character, how smart I am, I have everything for a first rounder,” Ruiz said.

What if we trade down in hopes of drafting Ruiz.......only to have another team draft him ahead of us. What's the fall back plan, after had passing on better rated players at 17?
Eagles like him but they desperately need WR.

Such a game plan to trade down in the hopes of drafting their center of the future in Cesar Ruiz is seemingly a workable plan. The Cowboys' center spot is a valuable spoke in the wheel of making the OL another effective unit within their offensive setup. Let's see how that plan goes, assuming it truly is one. Let's bear in mind that we could obtain extra draft pick(s) for such a deal if it happens. I can see where it might work, if handled correctly.

I would trade down in the first round and take CB Fulmer. That would give us 3 3rd round picks. I would trade two of those and get another 2nd rounder. Then I would trade our 4th and 3rd and move up to the top of the 3rd round.

I would take a DT and Center Cushenberry with our two 2nd rounders. Then go WR with that high 3rd round pick.

Then call it a day with 3 day 1 starters and that DT can be a big rotation guy and start next season.

Interesting question.

Ruiz has been rated as a late first-type.

I have a feeling they would trade down just enough.

There are a select group of teams that might value center as a late first rounder.

Center is the most important position on the Oline, but it is not a need right now. Looney play well at Center back in 2018. McGovern also played Center half the time while at Penn State. I believe one other backup Olineman has a little experience playing Center. No way should the Cowboys use a super costly 1st round pick on a Center. The 1st round pick should be used on a true game changer. The Cowboys multi-Super Bowl winning Oline did not have a single 1st round pick on its Oline. Not 1. If an NFL Oline Coach can't coach up an Oline and turn them into formidable players, he has no business coaching for the Dallas Cowboys.

Where are you coming up with all these third round picks?

When we draft for pure need we end up with bad picks. Take Ruiz when you pick if he's the best player on the board overall, not the best C available.

This is how we ended up with Taco Charlton.
Wrong...we ended up with Taco Charlton becoming a bust because we had an ancient Coach in Marinelli.

Taco was a good pick...bad coaching

Horrible example.

If you think there is a better Center worthy of 17th pick present your guy...stop reaching with faulty examples

Hot 150: Gil Brandt's top-ranked prospects for 2020 NFL Draft - NFL.com

RANK

34

Matt Hennessy, C
School: Temple | Year: Junior (RS)
Measurables: 6-foot-3 7/8, 307, 5.18 40, 30-inch vertical jump, 9-2 broad jump, 4.60 short shuttle, 7.45 three-cone, 23 lifts.

I love that he did everything at the combine -- and that he worked out well. Hennessy's brother, Thomas Hennessy, plays long snapper for the Jets. The four-year player redshirted in 2016, then started 36 games over the next three years. He should start and play for many years in the NFL.

RANK

47

Cesar Ruiz, C
School: Michigan | Year: Junior
Measurables: 6-foot-2 3/4, 307 pounds, 5.08 40, 33-inch vertical jump, 9-5 broad jump, 4.64 short shuttle, 7.91 three-cone, 28 lifts.

The three-year player made 26 starts at center over the past two years, after making five starts as a true freshman in 2017. Ruiz allowed three sacks on 995 career pass plays. He spent two years at IMG Academy in high school and was named second-team All-Big Ten in 2019. Ruiz should be good but not great -- a steady player in the NFL.

Tyler Biadasz, C
School: Wisconsin | Year: Junior (RS)

No, they ended up with Taco because of Marinelli and Hill was his second mistake. Both busts are due to one coach that is no longer with the team.

The center position is a game changing position. When Dallas drafted Frederick and moved on from Costa, it had a massive impact. The whole offense improved. Center is the heartbeat of the OL and Dak, Zeke, Cooper, etc can not play at their best with a subpar center.
