Does anyone on here actually expect anything out of Aldon Smith?

I keep seeing articles how he has not played since 2015. Ok,, that might be true but he has not been productive since 2012 or 2013. That is 7 or 8 years ago. Most players do not even have a 7 or 8 year career. Thinking this guy is going to help out is insane. This isn't anything more than wishful thinking.

On-top of all this, I keep reading about him turning his life around. I'm lost. His last arrest was less than a year ago. How anyone with his track record, you could consider a turned around life in less than a year is just laughable. Show me 2,3 or 4 years of being a straight then we can talk about his life being turned around. My guess he is still on probation. The state hasn't probably cleared him yet.

With all this said I do not have any issues with Dallas signing him and seeing if there is anything there.

I'm just talking about all the hype I see from people posting stuff on here that he is going to be a productive player. I have more faith in Gregory and I do not have a lot of faith in him also.
If you defined "productive" as sacks. How many sacks would he need in order for you to define him as "productive"?

Yes, I think he will give them a little somethin' somethin'

Nothing expecting a ton, but he will be better than the other backups they've had.

I'm expecting both Aldon and Gregory to be used as part of a rotation to rush the passer. Of course, that's assuming they're both allowed to be reinstated from indefinite suspension. That, coming from Roger Goodell, unfortunately, isn't a sure thing by any means. Other than that, securing a promising DE in the draft would quite possibly be well advised. Highly capable CBs can be had in the 2nd round or the 3rd this year, while DEs are scarce.

Playing Devils advocate - what if he really has cleaned up his life and wants to just focus on football. I know he is 30 and hasn’t played in over four years but the guy was partying and drinking in his early years, show up on Sundays and dominate.

I expect him to have a season ending injury in the first 4 games of the season

If reinstated I expect 2.5 sacks

why not? even low expectations is making the team and playing 50% of available snaps maybe 6sacks..

Heck Gregory has half the talent and never met his potential got 6 sacks, last year in MIA Taco had 5, both of them together barely equal ASmith..the dudes fruit 4yesrs playing were Elite caliber, beyond great..his numbers and his athleticism are through the roof..

his addiction got the best fo him but his bottom floor is a 6 sack guy..dude in his prime had six sacks in 3 games..

so yes if he stays clean plays all 16 even in a rotational role...6-12 sacks, I know he had a long absence but if Quinn could do it and we improved our line and have a more aggressive DC, im betting hes over 6 no doubt..

if not its not total fail they only invested like 960k if he doesnt play much..if he exceeds expectations and somehow rounds into shape and we make the playoffs with him active , look out..

Does anyone know the date he applied to be reinstated from indefinite suspension? Doesn't that start a 60 day clock for Baddell to answer? Say March 1st would be May 1st for example. Something to look forward too...lol

If Aldon plays quite a bit- I expect pressures, sacks and tfl's.

I expect the same from any other player we roll out there that sees significant snaps.

If he fails to meet these expectations I'm ready to move on sooner rather than later.

It’s unfortunate we’re having to sign someone like Smith. It’s all a result of the mistakes we made with Gregory and Taco.

I don't. its a low risk approach, and can be cut during preseason if he doesn't show he has anything....a flier and better than a no name college camp body with 0.01% chance of making the team.

so right now it seems we are taking the desperate approach to DE, with Smith, Gregory, Jackson, Crawford. we don't have an answer and seems like we are hoping one of them to step up, so depending on the feeling in the building, wouldn't surprise me for us to pick a DE in the first or second round....doesn't look like any of these guys are the answer.

the other option, which coaches maybe considering, is a move to 3-4, with Poe in the middle, McCoy at one DE and Lawrence at the other (although he is not a fit for a 3-4 DE) and then Smith and Gregory as potential OLBs, Jaylon and LVE in the middle, since both are better suited to being MLBs and for now a combination at the other OLB with Lee as the potential starter....this allows the best players to be on the field and some what take advantage of our personnel.[/QUOTE]

I have a sneaky suspicious this is exactly what they are thinking but not all at once. Slow transition......

Desperate? Desperate? Really?

Both Lawrence and Crawford have proven they can be starters in the NFL. They aren't the top tandem the in the NFL, but with a legitimate inside DT tandem for the first time in years with McCoy and Poe, Lawrence and Crawford are capable of putting up 10-20 sacks between them. After that, you have a group of young, recently drafted back-ups in Armstrong, Jackson and Jelks. And you have two formerly very highly rated guys that COULD BE big payoffs, but if they are not, you are not totally lost with the other 5 guys. And the draft is still to come.

Maybe you don't realize, but you're talking out of two sides here. (LOL)

BTW.....I read this board every day and I have not seen one post from a member suggesting he's going be productive w/o a caveat. Every post I have read about his production starts or ends with his time away, his conditioning or his struggle with alcohol.

I hear he has quit beating up women, so I only expect misdemeanors.
Heh. Only Jerry would resurrect a woman beater who has not played in 5 years and would not play anyway until 2021.
