New Defensive Scheme

Know what?

ANYTHING feels great after "line up and beat your man."

What a disgusting waste of a decade.
can't believe it took us a decade to get rid of him. That works when u have the best players in the NFL AND a good head coach.

But u gotta get creative at some point.

Looking at last year's defensive stats the Cowboys were in the middle of the pack both in rushing and passing defense, if we make a couple of changes and the team can finsih top 10 in both categories, that would be a major accomplishment. But we lost like 15 sacks from last year (Quinn and Bennett) so where are those sacks going to come from?? We also have a hole with no #1 cornerback right now.
Also Mike McCarthy and his staff are going to need a year or two getting the "right fits" in here defensively for what he's going to want to do.

So Stephen Jones discussed how our new defense will use a SAM/DPR, which explains why we have so much interest in LBs in this draft.
This was shared from a Mike Nolan defense from a few years ago.

There was some discussion that if we drafted Murray than Smith becomes our SAM/DPR or if we draft Chaisson that he is our SAM/DPR, you can also imagine guys like YGM, Weaver, or Baun playing there. Also, of course, Gregory.

It also makes sense why they are holding on to Crawford, if we see a lot of this alignment. I can see it going:
Chaisson/Gregory/etc.- Crawford - Poe-McCoy-DLaw as the other four. OR - to create mismatches you put DLaw next to the SAM/DPR and then create major headaches on that side. With his size, I can also imagine Aldon Smith playing with his hand on the ground and taking Crawford out of his spot.

Then, when we go nickel - you take out either Poe or Crawford and put in our 3rd corner.

I am kind of excited about the possibilities.
Seems similar to the defense Seattle was running when their defense first got good...Bruce Irvin was drafted to play that SAM.

Zach Baun seems like a good pick for that spot/SAM. Interested to see where they put a guy like Jelks, Joe Jackson fits right into the scheme at DE. Conversely I question does Woods fit in due to his lack of length.

I rather this team fix the front first.

My only real concern is the secondary. Really looking forward to see something new defensively.

Modern NFL defenses are evolving, as they should. Offenses always have the inherent advantage of being able to dictate the play, and the NFL rules are certainly structured to favor offense.

Today’s pass happy game has created a premium for defensive schemes that are flexible. LBs especially must be able to flex between being able to stop the run, handle pass coverage on multiple types and sizes of players, and in some cases even be good pass rushers.

Whatever is happening here with scheme, I just hope Mike Nolan is more aggressive than his predecessor. The Cowboys defense of the last 5-7 years was the easiest defense to read and was as predictable as a Texas summer. I’m hoping that changes this year.
Stop messing with the Texas weather!

very excited about Mike Nolan.
can't wait to watch it unfold...matrix style.

Nolan was fired from his Atlanta DC job.

he has a history of coaching terrible defenses.

look it up if you won’t believe it.

it’s true.

You old enough to remember Parcells deciding to dumb down the defense because the players kept screwing up their assignments? Intelligence matters

I remember the defense being pretty dumb in Parcell's last year, and dopey old Wade turning it into a good defense after him.

A poor teacher blames his students.

No need. You are not lying. A couple of things that give me hope.
First, wise people learn and and evolve. I dont think MM would have hired him if he had not learned and evolved.
Second, I believe we have a great staff of scouts led by McClay that have handicapped by trying to fit a 30 year old system. Hopefully, a newer, more reflexive system will allow the scouts to succeed.
