There's a lot of rumors about Hill for whatever reason. I have yet to hear anything confirmed about him just a lot of assumptions. .

Wasn’t he the one that fell asleep while a former player was giving a speech and got called out for it by the speaker in a room for full of players and people?

Yes.

Problem with Cowboys Coaching
  • The Cowboys drafted him to play 3tech DT.
  • He practiced at 3tech in training camp and all off-season.
  • He played at 3tech in the preseason games.
  • Marinelli put him at 1tech when he played regular season games.
  • Switching position during the season is a problem for most rookies.
  • Switching positions for a rookie that was already known at draft time to need more time than average to adjust to the NFL was just dumb.

Review of Hill
  • Marinelli said during the season that Hill had the willingness to do it and a high motor but just wasn't "getting it".
  • Hill's 2nd D-Coordinator in college gave a glowing report on him in an interview after the draft in terms of motor, etc.
  • There were 2 issues with Hill in college.
    • 1. He was slow to adapt to change. The new staff wanted him to rusher the passer as a 3tech DT. The previous staff played him as a 3-4 NT.
    • 2. He got angry when the new coaching staff would not let him transfer. He loved the original coaching staff. That got him in the new Head Coach's doghouse.
  • Hill was ok physically when he did play.
  • Part of the issue was that the Cowboys defense was already out of sorts with Kris Richard trying to make changes without actually being the D-Coordinator.
    • The biggest weakness for the Cowboys defense was defending the run vs zone running teams.
    • Hill's biggest problem in the preseason was playing against zone running teams.

He hast the raw talent but doesn't sound as if he possesses the mental capacity to salvage himself.

Sounds as if he's someone who would rather sit around and pout rather than play.

Who cares about DL Hill? No one is relying on him to do anything. We have other options at that position. Poe and McCoy are there along with Woods. Gallimore is there too for competition. Some others are there too.

Hill shows up and plays well or he is history. Nice if he can contribute. But, he is nothing but gravy at this point. Team can play without him.

Yeah he's done. Happens all the time in the NFL - new coaching staff comes in and they bring in their own preferred players via draft and free agency. The new staff doesn't care that he was a 2nd round pick, they aren't forced to try to salvage him because he wasn't one of their picks.

Absolutely. I expect him and Neville to be really good rotational players behind McCoy and Poe. Having two vets pushing them/leading them will help make them the players we need them to be.

Speculation: too bad Woods looks to be out. He deleted his Twitter account and I haven't heard anything about him :(

Woods shows as counting 750K towards the Cowboys cap. It would be really odd not to sign an ERFA. The money is not guaranteed and the number is set by the rules.

McCoy should be a good influence on the young DTs.

Yes of course.

You gotta give him the 3 year rule at least.

He was a 2nd round pick that we reached for as well and should’ve been a 3rd.

I don't think you 'gotta give' him anything. Certainly not 'three years', based off of how bad he was in year one.

The onus to turn this around is on him, not anyone else.

This regime didn't draft him, Rod Marinelli did. Nobody here is stuck waiting for Trysten Hill to 'get it'. They're moving forward, he can either get with the program or he can get out and be replaced by somebody who does give a **** about playing football.

There is no way of knowing until he practices in pads. One on one.

This is a Cowboys message board. We discuss players and speculate on the unknown.

Yes, anything that Hill contributes is a bonus at this point.

Physically, Hill does have high upside. He has a "high motor". He is not a Taco type that lacks hustle on the field.

Hill just has to learn how to play in the NFL. If he has success in 2020, it will be another indication that Marinelli was not getting it done as a coach.

Did anyone see game film on Hill, not just the “highlights”. It is pretty BAD. I don’t see how they drafted this guy. Probably a Marinelli gem. Major BUST!

He is going to have to turn some heads in camp to be. I’m sure the new staff will give him some extra time to adapt to their schemes. He has a lot stiffer competition now though with McCoy, Poe and Gallimore added. He struggled last year when Woods was basically his low bar to clear for extended playing time.

He never looked like he was capable of handling NFL o lineman. Hopefully he beefed up and added some strength this offseason and can at least wedge in as a decent rotational player. Decent would be miles ahead of where he was last year.

If he can’t manage that level of progress this offseason I think he is headed towards Taco 2.0 status. If a 1st rounder can be a bust in under 3 years. There is no reason to believe Hill can’t be too. It would be a great bonus if he becomes anything close to decent, and can add depth to our improved talent.

Think he could be. He's gonna have to start out as a 3T on passing downs and maybe play some 3-4 DE

With the 1st UCF coaching staff, he played as a 3-4 NT.

He was 308 at the combine but reportedly had played at over 320 at some point in time.

He is strong but in the preseason he had no clue how to play against zone blocking.
-Then-again, the Cowboys entire defense had no clue against zone blocking. It was their #1 problem in 2019 and in the 2018 season playoff game vs the Rams.

When he played real games in 2019, Marinelli played him primarily at 1tech despite the fact that during training camp he only practiced at 3tech and he only played 3tech in the preseason games.
