Seems like defensive scheme was always the problem in the Garrett Era, even after replacing DCs and DB coaches. Garrett was clueless in building a staff

Well it's been obvious for YEARS that this Marinelli defensive scheme is actually allergic to takeaways. It puts the back in position to take away big plays but it also takes them away from a position to take the ball away, either through interceptions or tomahawking the ball out of the ball carrier's hands.

Funny. It was that Marinelli scheme that averaged more than 3 TO a game in Chicago from 2010-2012

How was the defense when Wade was the HC and DC?

This is Garrett, not Marinelli.

Often what I saw was zone coverages and guys playing not to get burned deep, to keep the play in front of them. I would suspect we will see more aggressive play and more chances taken by DB than sitting back keeping the play in front of them.

The old Tampa2 system was designed to force throws that an opportunistic corner or safety could step into the passing lane and take the ball. Once they moved away from that and started mashing together Marinelli's system with a different coverage scheme it really went down the drain.

Those of you who don't know Clay Mack, he's a big-time DB coach/trainer based in DFW. He said he doesn't think its a personnel issue with the backend. He said when he trained the Cowboys DBs in the offseason the coaches were forcing them to do only one technique instead of coaching to their strengths.

Marinelli was the biggest detriment to this team. perhaps one could argue Garrett since he's the one who kept him on his staff. but Marinelli took the talent available and neutered it. him being gone is going to make a noticeable difference.

Pretty good in 2007 and 2009. The 2009 defense was #2 in the league in scoring defense.

This thread reminds me of what he said about corners, though... "If they're better at press, we'll let 'em press. If they're better off, we'll play them off." He was big on tailoring everything to a player's strengths. Seems obvious, but some coaches can't seem to handle that.

Well, not a lot of new news here, unfortunately. I don't recall who I was discussing this with, like a year ago. But the way Richard ran his Defensive Backfield was not typical. Remember, it was said more then once that the Back End of the Defense and the Front End didn't really play together a lot of the time. There was a reason that you had Co-DC responsibilities in Dallas and there was a reason that Marinelli was talking about retiring. A lot of the fan base tend to blame Marinelli and I think you can make a case that his scheme had issues but, nobody really called out Richard much. Each ran a very unique scheme, in terms of how they played their personnel. You can't really do that independently and expect to succeed. What needs to happen there is that you pick a horse and you ride with it. This, to me, is a case where we tried to play both sides against the middle. I feel like Jerry saw Payton leave, he saw Uberfluss move on, he saw Zimmer move on and they've all proven to be pretty decent coaches for other teams and this is just three. There have been more. I think that Jerry didn't want to lose Richard and so he ended up allowing autonomy on the defensive side of the football, between the two schemes and what we saw were results that cost us. You can't play defense that way. All parts of the whole need to be working in unison and we didn't have that IMO.

Because the old Garrett you do as I say kick step interfered with what was working.

Just commenting on our tendency to love a guy—right before we hate a guy. Since I think it might come in handy here again when the games count.

LLLOOOLLL, and Mitch T. who is close to getting cut, had his best game against us looking like Steve Young carving us up.
Truely.

The Rams did the same after we lost in the playoffs to them.

Ate our lunch and boasted what fools we are.

Garrett and Jerrah was a humbling experience.

All becuz Jerrah wanted to show everybody he had a midas touch at picking coaches.

Poppycock.

My new fav word and fav snack.

yes the culture from garrett the cancer.
do it his way or the highway
the cancer spread from top down.
lost out on players because they dont fit
lost out on players because they are not rkg
players performed far from optimally due to coaches not adapting to players' strength and weakness.
