If you don’t like it because of the optics, fine.
If you don’t like it because of the history of the number, fine.
If you don’t like it because it reinforces the “Jerry is a meddlesome owner”, fine.
If you don’t like it because you wanted to see him wear #10, fine.

But I don’t see how Jerry forced him... what’s he going to do... threaten to not sign him if he doesn’t wear #10?

I don’t doubt Jerry talked to him about it; marketing stuff, etc.
exactly.
anyone really believe Dallas threatened to un-draft him because he didnt really want 88???
what are they gonna do....rescend the pick.

Do I really have to explain it to you, and the feline comment was uncalled for.

That's the thing though. No one can explain it to me because no one has a handle on those rules at the time. So when people try, they're none too pleased with the responses because they can't overcome the rules they can't explain in the first place. Thus, they go to the ol' reliable "we wuzz robbed but I can't say how according to the rules" line.

While I doubt they're forcing him to wear 88, it would be easy enough for them to do. If he doesn't wear the jersey assigned to him, the rules probably say he can't play. I assume they have official roster numbers in each game.

How self absorbed can Jerry be? Let the damn kid wear what number he wants.....

I think he should do what he wants. That’s what happens when you own the team.

Go buy the team from Jerry and then you can play fantasy football just like he does.

Sure, Cee Dee probably not married to #10, but I guarantee you he not married to #88.

He is from Texas. He knows the history. He's too young to have seen Pearson and probably Irvin too. He probably seen Dez play. He also knows millions of fans love the 3 best WRs in Cowboys history.

When given the opportunity to choose a number, he was happy to choose #10. Yet Jerry selfishly ignored his desires.

I'd wear the number 88 too if I were Cee Dee, but I bet he is feeling some kind of way about it.

He didn't say that he didn't care what number he had. He said he wanted 10. How is this even up for discussion? He clearly had a preference and it wasn't 88.

And please, spare us the idea that Jerry "didn't think about it". If Jerry is so naive to the idea that players have favorite or preferred numbers after 30+ years of ownership, he's easily the dumbest person on the planet. Kids that play in youth sports have number preferences. High school players have number preferences. College players have number preferences. Are we really supposed to believe that the moment a player is drafted they no longer care what number they wear?

He said he wanted 10. Would it have been impossible to just let him pick his own number? Suppose he wanted 10 now and in 2 weeks he wants 88. Was there some sort of time limit on the availability of 88? Let him pick his number and if he picks 88 then he picks 88. If he picks something else, he picks something else.

Why does Jerry have to be involved here? Regardless of how committed he was to any number, why force him to wear a specific number?
I didn't say he said he didn't care, I said we don't know that he cares to any real degree. Having said #10 doesn't mean #10 is important to him. He may have just figured he would have to pick something because his college # wasn't available, and he picked #10.

And I didn't say Jerry had to be involved, nor that Jerry couldn't have just let him pick that number. I just said it may not have played out the way you and others want to portray it. Again, for all we know, when Jerry realized Lamb had told the media about #10 he may have offered to let Lamb go with #10, but Lamb decided he was okay with honoring Jerry's friend. If you are honest you will acknowledge that you don't know how this played out

And on the number, you need to slow down and read what you responded to. In no way did I suggest Jerry wouldn't understand players have number preferences, but the number preference Lamb had shown was #2, not #10. That was my point. It's not far fetched to think Jerry may not have realized Lamb had a backup.

And, again, I would bet dollars to donuts that the little soap opera scenario fans are creating in this thread bears no resemblance to how it actually did play out. It's laughable that fans think this is such a major issue. Maybe it's the stay at home Covid-19 Blues that are to blame.

I can see the media eating up that controversy and burning it into the ground.
No way that happens.

He can get over it.

88 was Pearson's before it was Michael's, so if it were going to be unofficially retired, Irvin never would've gotten it. That said, it is given out too freely.
Too freely? The TEs got it because there are only so many 80 numbers and this was before they allowed 40s for TEs.

Since Pearson, they offered it to 1st rnd WR Mike Sherrard (declined it), 1st rnd WR Michael Irvin, 2nd rnd WR Antonio Bryant, 1st rnd WR Dez Bryant, 1st rnd WR Cee Dee Lamb

I'm sure it won't, but I think they technically could force him to either wear it or watch from the sideline.

Technically, yeah, you're correct.
Still out of the realm of how far this team would go for many reasons and that being one of them.

But yeah, that is a possibility that dwells within this distinct reality.

That's a lot of years of wear, for a jersey that should get the same respect as Roger Staubach's and Tony Dorsett's.

Imagine they don’t sell many jerseys cuz of everyone previously having 88 of Bryant or Irvin or Pearson and during the end of preseason he switches to 10 lol
