That's a lot of years of wear, for a jersey that should get the same respect as Roger Staubach's and Tony Dorsett's.

Tex Schramm started it being a legacy number. There are only so many numbers available and as I already stated the league use to not even let TEs wear anything other than 80s.

And the Cowboys do let players wear 33, they just have to be on defense.

I'm just refuting that they "can't force him" to wear it. I think if he insisted on a different number, they'd let him wear whatever unassigned number he wanted. He probably just wasn't aware of its history, not being a Cowboys fan growing up.

I heard plenty of stories where players were just given out a number by the trainer (or whoever does the uniforms) with no input. They can always switch once there are final cutdowns and more numbers available. This happened to Pollard last year.
