Big Mike’s leadership sends the right message this offseason

We have yet to play a regular season NFL game under the leadership of new HC Mike McCarthy, but his first offseason so far has been nothing short of outstanding. There have been numerous threads here about the great draft we had and the quality of players acquired, and how exciting this new infusion of talent and hope the MM has brought, and I agree.

But I want to focus on something I think is underrated in what has happened this offseason- a message MM has been sending that has the potential to improve the culture of our team:
  • A player’s talent is more important than systems and schemes- not the other way around. Big Mike has said repeatedly that he measures players first by talent as opposed to their ability to align with the schemes we run. Under Garrett, too often it seemed we were drafting players whose scheme “fit” was more important than raw football talent and athletic ability.
  • No one on this team is guaranteed anything. Another refreshing change. Let me make something clear- I like Dak and I believe he is too often unfairly bashed by some of our fans here. I believe Dak will be signed to a long term deal and I’m good with that. BUT....I was glad to see the Andy Dalton signing because it sends a message to every player on this team. No one is more important than the team as a whole. And everyone must earn their stripes.
During the Romo years under Garrett, I was bothered by how much this team protected Romo and never really put any pressure on him to deliver more. Despite Romo’s all too often lack of results when the season was on the line, there never seemed to be any difficulty or hesitancy in re-signing him or even hinting that someone else could be developed or brought in to challenge him. I liked Romo and respected him. But I felt like Jerry and Garrett coddled him.

Both Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman faced having backups that breathed down their collars for playing time and there’s little doubt it made them better.

Roger had Craig Morton and later Danny White on the roster when he played, and he said many times those guys made him better. Troy had Steve Walsh followed by Steve Buerlein to deal with. I realize in the cap era it’s more difficult to do this, but I see the Dalton signing as a good thing for Dak and this team. I know he wasn’t signed “to be the starter”, but it does send the right message.

I like what Big Mike’s leadership has brought to this team so far. It’s way too early to declare him a success before we’ve even had a single game. But the message being sent about talent and competition is a good start to a new era.

No excuses.

That's the message I hope our players have picked up on this offseasons. We have good starters and solid backups pretty much across the board. There might be a few positional question marks here and there, but that will all be worked out in training camp. We have a who's who of ex-NFL head coaches as assistants. So you guys, the players, have no reason to say the FO isn't even trying to give you everything that's needed to have a successful season. Because you can clearly see their efforts, as an all in scenario this year. So let's give it our all and go for it all.

:flagwave:No excuses.

I don't know it for sure, but I think they're absolutely sending a message. This team has NEVER put much in the way of resources into the backup QB, it's been one of my real frustrations through Jerry's tenure (post Jimmy)... until now. You don't hand out a $7 million contract (I understand that there are incentives) unless you're prepared to use the guy.

I sure hope so. This has been one of the biggest excuse machines in sports. Jerry made more excuses for mediocrity than anyone I’ve ever seen in a business where winning a championship is the gold standard.

Looking at the very recent history is the best indicator.

Also, they just waived Rush. Wouldn't you keep him around if Dalton was potentially going to be the starter?

Not necessarily. They drafted a kid in the 7th round they obviously felt might be good enough to develop. Besides IMO you keep players around because of their talent and upside, not because they fill a role. I wouldn’t have kept Cooper Rush if I felt he wasn’t as good as some other guys on my roster.

Dalton mat push Dak out, if Dak does not sign at least his tag offer. Dalton starts and wins, while Dak sits watching videos of Cabo, since he can't go there yet. Then Dalton will be the starter while they groom DiNucci.

This really is ANOTHER lesson to all the Garrett apologists that supported him. If it wasn't clear how bad Garrett was during his tenure, then it should even more clear now.

This is what REAL HC's do. Guys that Jerry can respect and give authority to.

Dalton being the starter doesn't preclude the possibility Dak backs him up.

We;ve already established if the #1 gets injured and we go on a win streak #2 stays #1. ;)

Signing Dalton told Dak either sign before the season starts or we're ready to ride a cheaper option for 16 games while you rot on your couch.

You aren't very good at this analysis stuff are you?

Great post, OP.

Big Mike has no favoritism towards anyone on this roster. He wants what’s best for the TEAM.
If only we as fans would follow his lead. We childishly insult our own players...players who are GOOD for this team. Just throw around bias and agenda...while being self-proclaimed football experts.
