This time of year, its always fun to see how many of our diehard fans break out their pet cat stories. You know, those favorite players that are often at the end of the bench or deep in the depth chart but have captured the heart and imagination of some fans. Sometimes they pan out...often they don’t.

So I thought it would be fun to make a list of some of the most popular “pet cats” around here the last few years and how they turned out- either playing here, elsewhere or not at all.

I will start- Here’s a list of some guys I’ve seen mentioned often by some fans on these fan boards as pet cats, that I never quite understood what the big deal was. In no particular order:
  • Rico Gathers TE- I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a sixth round draft pick with no college football experience on their resume garner so much hype and drool. He was definitely a great athlete. Football player, not so much. He looked great in shorts and preseason games against 3rd string guys who had no shot at making it in the NFL, but if you listened to some, he was headed to the ROH and maybe Canton. Cut in 2018. Somehow his HOF run has ended.
  • Matt Johnson- S- a 4th rounder out of Eastern Washington, he was hailed by some as “the steal of the draft” in 2012. Unfortunately, he pulled every muscle known to science and never could get on the field. But man was he hyped. He somehow lasted on the roster 3 seasons before announcing his retirement in 2015. Good athlete but just couldn’t stay healthy.

  • Charles Tapper- DE- Another 4th rounder in 2016 that had several fans frothing that he was going to bookend our DL with DLaw. Heard him hailed a lot between 2016-17. Again, injuries did him in. Was released here in 2018, landed with the jets but they released him again recently.
This list could go on and on...I’m interested in some fun memories you have of other pet cats that didn’t quite have nine lives.

Who’s on your list?

Lots of PS WRs get hyped as the Next Big Thing. Meh guys like Jamaica Rector, Sam Hurd, Cedrick Wilson. Then the designated Diamond in the Rough Who Runs Real Fast. One of those every year.

Some other guy who I've spent the entire morning trying to recall his name....interior OL...never played at all. I'd guess mid 2000s. I think it was around the time Cory Proctor was losing games by himself. Not positive. Killing me though. Cant find the name anywhere.

Edit....Phil Costa.....ouch!

I was so convinced that Steve Pelluer was the next great Cowboys QB, that I wanted Them to draft the hugely overhyped Tony Mandarich instead of Troy.
Luckily, this was pre-internet and none of My Friends cared about American Football, so My shame was never made public.

Drew Henson- who really was pretty good but Parcells couldn't stand him.
Big John Dutton- from the Landry era. I thought for sure he'd add more to the Cowboys Too Tall Jones, Harvey Martin and Randy White mystique of Doomsday.
Steve Pelleur- who resembled a young Roger Staubach in the way he played, but he did more damage than good when Landry started him over Danny White.
Anthony Wright was also a good quarterback, but never panned out.
But the biggest quarterback disappointment was how Dave Campo wasted Clint Stoerner and blamed him for the losses. Stoerner was very talented.
But, by far, Tashard Choice and Kellen Moore have been the two most wasted talents by piss-poor coaching and management in Dallas.

Oh, and by the way: I wanted Jerry to hire Bill Belichek when the Cleveland Browns fired him when they moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens.

Henson wasn't good at all. He was even terrible in the world league when Dallas sent him there. The guy had a really slow release and couldn't read a defense at all.

Chad Hennings - I was imagining getting a steal because of his military commitment. Kind of a Staubach situation on defense. He did end up being a good player, but not the kind of player I was hoping for.

Matt Moore - I thought he looked great in preseason, and although I didn't think of him as the level of a quality starter, I thought he could have made a strong backup for years. I think history proved I was right, but the Cowboys tried to sneak him onto the practice squad and lost him.

Ebeneezer Ekuban - After flops with Shante Carver and Kavika Pittman, I thought Ekuban might actually be a player. Ekuban was better than those two, but still never lived up to what I hoped he could.

There was a pile of people on the old boards who were majorly POed when we released Moore over ragarm Brad Johnson. Brad couldn't even throw 20 yards any more!!!!!
