That's what I'm thinking too. Gregory may have had 6 sacks as a part-time pass rusher, but that's as good as it got with him. Aldon Smith was an absolute terror.

And unlike Gregory, Smith wasn't a liability or a target of opponent running games the way Gregory was. He and Crawford were a huge part of the Rams running over the Cowboys to the tune of 273 yards.

I think Smith brings the physicality and strength to hold up against the run as well.
Part time pass rusher is, in my mind, Gregory's ceiling, and even then, at best, a good role player but not a major impact one. I don't know if Smith will be any better at this point, but like you said, he was an absolute terror earlier in his career, so the ceiling is likely much higher with him.

Let's hope he can stay clean off the field. With such a long layoff it's going to take a little time for him, but should be productive as the season progresses.

My thoughts exactly.

I'll put it like this - I cannot think of a 1 year "character issues" gamble FA we've signed whose issues have not cropped back up. And to my knowledge, coming back to pro football after 5 years off is unprecedented in the sport.

Very low chance this gamble hits, very high chance it backfires. I'm not enthusiastic about this signing at all.

Aldon has hitched his wagon to Jay Glazer and a Veteran support group.

So now if he relapses or slips up, he's not just letting down his teammates, coaches, fans, and family, he is letting down this amazing band of brothers he has been working with the past few years.

I like his chances.

That's great but he should be viewed as a luxury, a lottery ticket, not as the solution at RDE.

I suspect the FO believes he's part of the solution.

I can't blame you or anyone else for being skeptical.
