50 other players were taking notes on the Zeke negotiation and what they wrote down was that Jerry caves when under pressure. That probably directly lead to this situation.
If the Cowboys just give everyone what they want, players will ask for more and more until the team can barely put a team on the field due to cap constraints.
I think Jerry caved for two reasons: 1) He thought Zeke was pivotal and this was the year to prove everyone wrong and show Garrett could lead them to a championship. 2) He's getting much older and feels mortality and knows each year they have to make a run for it because it could be his last and he craves another championship. Not having Zeke would have hurt those chances (in his mind).
So for Garrett and for himself.
