Ezekiel Elliott contract isn't bad at all

In my view, Zeke's contract is actually pretty good for the team.

Elliot has a 10.9 million cap hit this year, which he is obviously worth. I think that cap hit is about the same as his 5th year option would have been..

In 2021, #21 has a cap hit of 13.7 million. Granted that is high, but if his play only slightly declines, Zeke will still be worth it.

In 2022, if Zeke's becomes innefective or isn't a RB opposing defenses fear anymore, (or if Pollard becomes the RB1 or we find a diamond in the rough in the 2021 draft) he can be designated as a post-June 1st cut. Doing so, would result in a 4.1 million dead money hit but create 12.4 million in cap savings.

So basically, we have Zeke on the team this year and in 2021. I hope he can reverse the trend of RBs having a short shelf life in recent years, but it is good to know that the front office can release him after the 2021 season he can be released if needed.

(Sorry if this topic seems distasteful given the recent news on Zeke, but just wanted to look at his contract again since it's been almost a year since his deal was done.)

His contract was never that bad. Just a boilerplate for arguments by peeps who don't dig into the intricacies of things.

These deals are almost never as bad as they look in print.

If Dallas wants Zeke for that 3rd year they could easily restructure him to lower that cap hit to 7-8M by adding 2 years and paying his yearly sal up front.

Most of these mega deals end up with guys making about 60% of the reported amount.
For instance Tony Romo signed an 103M extension with Dallas in 2013.

He played 4 more years and made 65M.
His CAREER NFLearnings are 127M.

A lot of contract money isn't real.

I'll bet Dak secretly wishes he'd waited his turn and took another year! Otherwise, he might have had his dough by now.

Waited his turn? He played out his entire contract. Zeke is happy he didn't wait his turn. Worked out great for him. Best advice from an agent, ever. In fact, when Zeke was getting criticized, Dak was held out as the fine example of a player waiting his turn. Now he's the Devil for waiting his turn and having the audacity to want the going rate. He probably should have held out with Zeke together. They'll hate you if you do, hate you if you don't.

He played out his entire contract? Excuse me, but didn't he have 2 years left on it before going to Cabo? I don't hate Zeke at all -- just what he did.

Does any pro player truly give two sheezes about their team's fans' feelings about their personal monetary proprietary interests?
I've never heard of such a conflagration.

And they shouldn't. Fans will remain fans.

Well put. The real difference is the 1st four year rookie contracts. One got drafted in the 1st, 4th overall and didn't complete the entire contract before it was extended, the other played the entire rookie contract, drafted in the 4th on a discount.

Dak should have caught the first plane to Cabo after Zeke signed his contract last year.

When Zeke starts making a difference like he did in 2016 then we can say he is worth maybe 10M. Until then he isn't.
