If you were Jerry Jones, how would you approach Dak for an extension?

No knock raid his house and make him sign a contract in the middle of the night.

This is all about money and not years like the media keeps saying. If it were about years who wouldnt want a short term contract with Dak.

You and your Barbie-obsession are projecting your own feelings and portraying them as facts. The issue has been years, and it's been so for months. Dak, not the Cowboys, wants the shorter deal.

Sure, why not?

Look, the FO want him long term and thefthe for a long-term contract has been laid.

One of the major complaints from this board,t media and fandom, in general, was Jones failed to discuss or execute a contract last year. By extension, it makes sense (to that group, anyway) to start the contract discussions sooner rather than later.

Jerry or Stephen, whichever Idiot you think has the final say will cave and give Dak what he wants.

We have a great Fantasy Team.

#1 offense, #1 jersey sold, most fans, biggest revenue.
What else is there?

At this point, I wouldn't approach him at all.
Let him prove himself under the new regime.

Resume negotiations in 2021.
This is the only legitimate action.
The Cowboys blew it when they tagged Dak with the exclusive tag. They should have used the non-exclusive tag and shopped Dak. Even if he were to succeed, it would have at least allowed them to potentially gain a great deal if another team was interested.
I really can't believe Jerry missed this opportunity to garner two number one picks with a brand new head coach.
It could have been the Great Train Robbery, part 2.

Why would JJ approach Dak? Cowboys don't need to make a decision until early 2021. A lot will happen between now and then including a full season (maybe) in a new system with a new HC and a possible financial crisis that might impact the 2021 cap.

The pressure is all on Dak to perform this season.

this^

I wouldn't. I would see team possibly loaded with more offensive talent than any other time in its history and let him run it. See if he can elevate play of others (we really haven't see than yet). See how he handles playoff teams. See if he can actually get past 2nd round of playoffs. If he checks each box then you give him what he wants next year.

He didn't elevate Amari Cooper's play? 2019 was a career year for him. Also Randall Cobb had his best season since 2015.

Personally I think a longer term deal is more likely to happen before the July 15th deadline now that Dak has signed the franchise tag. I think Dak signed it at this point to show good faith and in the end both sides still want a longer term deal, I think that will be achieved

The biggest tool in any deal is the willingness to walk away. Jerry and Co lost that leverage already so they will have cave. Dak and more importantly, his agent knows that they are walking away so they have no reason to cave.

If it had been me, I would never said "dak is the future" etc type comments. I would put it out there that in 4 years he hasn't done squat and since his rookie year has looked bad against the better teams. Sign, don't sign, don't matter to me. Then put a contract at 28-30mil per year on the table and walked out.

Few weeks away from that July 15th deadline.

How would you negotiate with Dak and what kind of deal would you offer him?

How do you get Dak and his agent to come to an agreement?

This should cover it....

JJ should tell him simply this:

We have you for this year, we have had you for the last 4 years. Sign our 5 year deal at $34/YR or next year the offer is going to be lower.

We have Dalton as a solid backup and whom can take the reigns and win games if needed. We can go back to the draft at any year and get another QB.

Meanwhile you are wasting your golden years with us, good luck with free agency. If you don't sign with us all you will ever be is a bounty hunter QB looking for your next big check and never having a legacy to look back on.

That's what JJ should say to him.

This is all about money and not years like the media keeps saying. If it were about years who wouldnt want a short term contract with Dak. He has proven nothing except he can play in the NFL with a great supporting cast. Jerry should yank those previous offers off the table and replace them with a 3 year 25 mil a year contract that expires in 15 min and say take it or leave!
This comment doesn't make sense. If the Cowboys didn't think Dak was worth a long term deal why would they be talking about $320-35 million at all?

Huh?

This makes zero sense. The Cowboys want the longer term deal for cap purposes. It's their MO and you can see that in most of their recent big contracts. They want Dak under contract for 5 years so they can spread signing bonuses over a longer period and then they will have the luxury of converting base salaries to bonuses and spread them over a few years to manipulate the cap in a given year.

Dak wants as short a contract as possible because he wants to cash in as often and as soon as he can.
