Team salary caps might decline significantly over the next 2 years. That means Dallas can't just play for this year but must look ahead at same time. I don't see Dallas franchising Dak next year as it would cost close to 20% of their Salary Cap. This means Dallas has this year to find out if: 1) Dak is true contending SB QB and 2) Dalton is adequate replacement of Dak after season. That's alot to get done in what might be shortened NFL season. Roster is too talented to be lazy about addressing alternatives to Dak after season. I say open up camp with competition at QB.

agree. THE CAPS are going to see a massive reset. Teams are already in panic mode. The Chiefs better hope they have a season...they handed boatloads of money out. They could see talent leave next year..its one thing to have a salary cap...it another to be able to pay it out and fulfil contracts. What happens when the revenue dries up? lol

Nothing to laugh about . The Cowboys were smart and/or lucky a deal didn't get done to extend Dak. He's not a bad QB by any means but I don't think he has what is needed to get this team to a Super Bowl. I know, throw stats at me about how great he is (against the worst teams in the league). Dalton may not be it either but if he is playing for as much as he is it helps us keep our current players in the event the cap decreases or sign other pieces to help out if it stays the same or somehow increases. Dalton's not a bad QB, he was just on a god awful team last year.

The AFC North has been a very tough division for a long time, more so than the NFC East. Dalton got things done there so he's legit here.

players contracts will see massive reductions and caps on what teams can pay a player depending on position. I think its coming. I think this has been a long time coming. It will be similar to the rookie salary cap/structure. Except based on tenure, position. The league cannot survive otherwise.

There's a new sheriff in town, I'm sure he wants to get his deputy up to speed. In a season that looks to be anything but normal you don't want to overthink this one. We need to hit the ground running, worry about Dak and the cap after the season ends, right now I'm looking to get my money's worth out of Dak.

Right. Worry about this season. The goal is to win now not two years from now.

I do. The offense isn't the problem (when Zeke shows up). The defense has to be better than last in takeaways and get stops on 3rd down. And the special teams hopefully won't be terrible.

Andy Dalton isn't the answer to anything. Texans need to get over the high school legend.

The Dallas FO has already made it crystal clear that the reason they got Andy Dalton was to have him available as Dak's backup and nothing more than that. If that's true, they may not be inclined to split reps between Dak and Andy, being limited to 2 games.

I expect they'll allow all three of their QBs to get their fair share of the reps in TC, although the lesser number of games being played in TC might very well make it necessary for Dak to get more than the other two. They may want to take a look at Ben DeNucci, too, though.

We'll see how they handle it but I'd be surprised if Dak isn't allowed more time than the others in the preseason games. If not, I wouldn't let it bother me, though. They're all likely to get their fair share of practice time, aside from the preseason games. Having only two preseason games probably won't allow enough time to see everyone equally, imho. I'm pretty sure Big Mike will be the one who's allowed to make that decision, however.

In a normal preseason, sure, why not? Keep Dak a little fresher.

However, in this shortened preseason the priorities are going to be weighed a little differently. Evaluation will still be more important but some time will be deducted and added to preparation for the regular season. Backups, bubble players, and rookie free agents will really need to maximize every opportunity because there are going to be fewer of them.

Pertaining to the QB's, this means Dak getting the majority of snaps. Since Dalton is a 9 year veteran, they may even decide to give most of the leftovers to DiNucci.

You gotta feel bad for the rookie free agents. Some good ones are going to slip through the cracks simply because teams will have much less time and opportunities to evaluate them.

I am not saying Dalton is better than Dak, but comparing the rosters each has had on offense over the past few years explains more about why Dalton's teams haven't had a ton of success.
