They did not do it out of injury necessity, they did it to get their 4 best PR's in the game at the same time and it proved to be problematic for every OL facing them, including the Cowboys in the playoffs. But truly having 4 DEs ( unless the LB crew is very good) will be a run game liability.
may be that explains , why our OL run over them in the 1st half ( MB III ) But got beat in 2nd half By the pass rush. Stupid secondary giving up a 35 sec TD to tie the game , it would have been a different game otherwise.

When a team needs a sack or want to get pressure on the quarterback its not uncommon for teams to have simply their best 4 linemen out there. I expect to see plays where Lawrence, Griffin and Smith are on the field at the same time.

Keep in mind, training camp drills are situational. Doesn't mean we're running it up by 1 or 2, with 2+ minutes left, opponent with 3 minutes left and the two minute warning still to go

Maybe they are using Aldon inside at NT during "end of game" situations since he is the much bigger player, thus keeping the smaller pass rushers (Lawrence and Griffen) on the edges? I assume they would be going with a 3 man front Dline?

He's taller. I'm not sure he's bigger. I know he was up in the 280s before joining the team, but I thought he'd dropped back into the 260s. Griffen is listed at 273 on nfl.com.

Could be the height, though. At 6-6, Smith can force the QB to have to throw over him and is pretty good at batting down passes.

In all fairness, in a lot of late game situations, you can't sub in/oy defenders
