He ain't lying but also I also think it's ideal getting his return on investment of Troy, Romo, and now Dak's huge contracts and surrounding them with top-level players. But not realizing/accepting your QB can just as successful with a great defense.

Looking for someone to blame for the atrocious defensive play by the Dallas Cowboys this season?

Blame their newly-minted Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Johnson.

Almost three decades ago, Jimmy showed Cowboys owner Jerry Jones that you can play defense on the cheap and still win championships. The Triplets were showered with all the glory in 1992 when the Cowboys won their first Super Bowl of the decade. Overlooked was the fact the Cowboys led the NFL in defense that year, yet didn’t place a single defender on the Pro Bowl team.

There were no stars on that side of the ball that season. At least no Pro Bowl-level stars. Jimmy showed Jerry how it's done and it became gospel for the Cowboys owner. He has been all about offense ever since. The players that touch the football, score the points and show up on the Sunday-night highlights are the names plastered on the franchise marquee. Offensive skill rules. Defense became – and remains -- an afterthought.

Haley was acquired for 1992, which many suggest got us over the hump and for 95 they acquired Deion Sanders.

Haley was well known for his on the field play and his off the field antics...
Sanders is known as one of the best ever at CB.

If Lawrence is performing like a top EDGE and your 2 young "star" LBs were performing as expected, this is all moot. The issue is the players Jerry has chosen to invest significant resources in defensively have not panned out for various reasons.

The title is misleading.

First, Jimmy Johnson understood defense and his defensive system. He wanted smaller, faster players. Smaller, faster players aren't exactly found in the top rounds of the draft, particularly for defensive players. Smallish DT and DE aren't considered blue-chippers.

Second, Johnson drafted offense because of where the Cowboys sat in the draft. Troy Aikman was a no-brainer. The Cowboys had to take a franchise quarterback. You need a player who is going to touch the ball on every down on offense. No other player does that. And the cornerstone of your franchise is the quarterback.

Third, Johnson wanted Junior Seau or Cortez Kennedy in the 1990 draft, but we had given up our first round draft pick (that would have been No. 1) to take Steve Walsh in the supplemental draft. Image having Kennedy AND Emmitt Smith. :omg: Then, again, maybe we don't get Emmitt if we had a first-round pick in that draft.

Fourth, in the 1990 draft, Jimmy wanted either Ray Agnew (DT who went to the Patriots) or James Francis (who went to the Bengals). The Bengals didn't want to deal so the Cowboys stayed put, then when they saw Emmitt dropping they traded with Pittsburgh to nab him. And the rest, they say, is history.

Fifth, in the 1991 draft, the Cowboys picked Russell Maryland overall and followed that pick with Dixon Edwards and Godfrey Myles.

So, in sum, it's not like Johnson didn't value defense. In fact, he did and would have picked defense had the draft fallen right. But because he knew defense, he knew what players fit his scheme. I don't know how one argues that Johnson built the Cowboys without an eye on defense. It just so happens that Aikman and Emmitt were generational players, and I don't care how much you need a defensive player, if you believe a player is a generational talent, you take him, ESPECIALLY when you need a quarterback and a running back.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever read.

They brought in Haley. They traded a 2nd round pick and other lower picks for Tony Casillas. They used multiple high picks on defenders like Maryland, Smith, Jones, Woodson, etc.

Nothing about that defense was on the "cheap".

I think what he saying is Jerry trying to build a great D via the draft.

that would mean you have the right scheme. right coaches and spend money on the right players. we went after haley and paid him. but he was critical in our success. we hit on the draft picks.

now, instead we pay Jaylon a 64M contract. pay Lawrence an 80M contract and get what?

if you want to go cheap, go cheap, but you have to at least get some players for your investment. we have got none.....ZERO. ZILCH....

during jimmy years, we drafted well on the defensive side......but now, Hill, Chido, Jaylon, LVE, Taco, and we bring in veterans like Poe, McCoy, Griffin, Quinn, none of whom contribute anything to this defense.

and you get a Xavier woods who says...you can't play hard all 70 plays...that shows mentality of this team. all you need is one player to take off each play and the defense falls apart.....

It's almost like these writers think they were the only ones around 30 years ago...

Tony Tolbert was drafted in '89 , Jimmie Jones in '90 , Dixon Edwards & Godfrey Miles & Leon Lett & Larry Brown in '91 , Robert Jones & Darren Woodson in '92 , and they traded for Tony Casillas , Haley and Thomas Everett and brought in James Washington through Plan B...................So the idea Jimmy focused simply on the offensive side of the ball is utterly preposterous , especially since Johnson made his name as a defensive coach before becoming a head coach........................

Jerry's like some our fans. No matter how many points the defense gives up it's the offense's job to score more. That theory hasn't worked and won't work.

Every Cowboys SB champion, like most SB champions, had a top 10 defense.
