Would Cowboys trade Amari Cooper?

The Cowboys seem to be in fire sale mode, particularly in the midst of a “this is fine” fire on the defensive side of the ball. Here’s the question: Would they trade offensive players, too?

There’s one name to wonder about as the trade deadline approaches, in our view. Receiver Amari Cooper.

Yes, the Cowboys gave up a first-round pick to get him two years ago. Yes, they gave him a new contract after the 2019 season ended.

But consider these facts. First, CeeDee Lamb fell into their laps after Cooper re-signed. Second, Michael Gallup is signed through 2021 to a bargain-basement rookie deal. Third, Cedrick Wilson is pretty damn good. Fourth, with Dak gone for the rest of the season, Cooper becomes a luxury the Cowboys don’t need.

Even though Cooper signed a five-year, $100 million contract, it’s really a two-year, $40 million deal. If someone would offer them a first-rounder for Cooper right now (last year, Mohamed Sanu brought in a second-round pick at the deadline), the Cowboys would be crazy to say no.

“But what about the cap consequences?” you may ask. Trading Cooper would trigger an $8 million charge in 2021, but it would be offset by avoiding $20 million in cash and cap space — creating a $12 million net-cap gain for the Cowboys in 2021.

So any contending team out there looking for a high-end receiver (like the Packers), the window could be open to snatch Cooper from the Cowboys.

I would trade him for a first round pick but I think if we move on from Cooper we might as well tell Dak we are going to draft a quarterback and your services are no longer needed.

If offered a 1st or a 2nd and a 4th I’d take the deal. Begin a mini-rebuild by gathering picks. Gonna be a couple of years before contending with Dak returning from injury and needing time to return to old form.

I believe you entertain trade options for Lawrence, Jaylon, Tyron, and Zeke. If high enough for Tyron and Zeke you make the deal. I’d give away Lawrence for a mid-round pick to get rid of the contract and Jaylon a 3rd day pick to get rid of that contract.

I would absolutely move him for a 1, im not sure who is that desperate for a receiver and who takes on that much cash? The cowboys spent a 1 on him, but that was also two cheap years left on his rookie deal.

Sanu got the Falcons a 2nd round pick last year - Sanu.

If a team feels that they're in contention, and a receiver like Cooper would put them over, I could see it happening. Whether that's likely or not is another story.

If the cowboys are going for a complete rebuild then yes. Lamb is a rookie, Gallup has not emerged as a true #1 reciever as most thought he would.

Good point. But I think Sanu was only making $6-7 million when the Pats traded for him, and Cooper is at $20, so that might affect the compensation too

The fire sale is useless furniture, damaged goods. The good stuff is not for sale. But for a 1st round pick, it would be very tempting.

Gallup, Lamb, Wilson and even Brown has picked it up this season. They can draft another WR next year in the 3rd round if BPA. If they can somehow get 4 players on defense before the WR. Or they could go OL.

With 2 1st rounders, a 2nd and 2 3rd round picks. We could get some good talent.

packers not sure but i was mulling that over who could want AC and or zeke that is teetering on falling apart by the time the playoffs come around, thats thr Bears..they need both., they have a defense but a very under performing pas and run game..imagine CHI with Zeke and cooper with foles..id say they are prime target for one or both our guys.

they are the biggest 5-2 pretenders ive ever seen, they could use a boost before it starts reeling..

NE caould use one or both or do they stand PAT, get it and go for a top 10 QB in this next draft?
