What can actually be done with Jaylon Smith?

I know there is a lot of Smith talk but I would love to get your serious take on what can actually be done with him. He was one of the worst players on the field again last night. The Giants game was the only good one he has had dating back to mid season last year. I don’t think he is limited physically. Personally I think he prefers to avoid direct contact, shows poor effort and clearly does little work in the film room.

If you were GM:

1. Would you cut him, trade him, bench him?
2. If you trade him what do you seriously think his trade value is?

I would trade him. I think someone would try to fix him. I think he gets you a 5 or a 6.

Thanks for your views.

You have to make a decision before the 5th league day of 2021. After that, he's guaranteed $7.2 million.

You'd like to trade him but at this point, there would probably be no takers. The only option is to cut him. It's a large dead money hit in a year where you may have some cap issues, but it does save $400K on the cap. Normally I'd say no, given the cap issues, but if you are really trying to shake up the defense this offseason, he might be a bullet you need to bite.

When you're full sending it on the QB he is good..

Problem is you can't just have a blitz only linebacker because it tips your hand,

Nobody will trade for him. His contract is awful.

I guess you keep him until the contract gives us an opportunity to cut him.

On the bright side LVE is starting to flash again. If he ever gets back to where he was then that's something we can definitely build on.

Yes LVE showed up last night. He just needs to stay healthy. They need to overhaul the position.

Just cut him. Send a message to your team that you are serious about the game. No player on the team should give a rats *** about winning and losing as long as he is on the team. I do not blame the team for not trying anymore and I do not care enough to even watch the games myself.

I've given up hope.

He is awful every week and they either dont see it or choose to ignore it.

They will blame it on the scheme change and run him out there again next year.

The Jerry stubborn slash not gonna look bad thing is real.

I think the drop foot never completely healed and teams are targeting him. He has no trade value because of the contract. Jaylon is still the best linebacker we have. We gave up 16 points on defense, he was not a problem yesterday.

What the hell happened to 2018 Jaylon Smith? It is incredible how far he has slipped.

Nothing happened to Smith, teams didn't have game film on him, now they have, and it's painfully obvious he is not football smart, nearly always out of position. Cuts inside when he should go outside, gets fooled with play action, takes bad angles on tackles. He got by in college on sheer physical ability, can't do that in the NFL.

Bust....

Depending on where you fall near the top of the draft, this will be a factor. If you are picking around 5-6, I think there's a real possibility you can draft Micah Parson from Penn St. I role the dice and release Jaylon with the hopes of landing Parsons. If picking higher (2-3) or lower (7-10), I keep Jaylon and target LB in the second/third rounds to compete with Jaylon and get into a rotation with him.

I don't think Jaylon lacks effort or preparation. I really believe he lacks instincts and plays with physical limitations due to the drop foot or knee.

Wow this is degenerate gambler syndrome to the max.
Except you really have nothing to lose at this point. I get the whole send a message to the team point, but from last nights performance I’m not sure that’s needed right now. It’s not like these guys have just packed it in.

plus what’s the alternative, are you playing Sean lee 40 snaps a game?
