If the Giants can do it, why can't we (Defense)

They have good DTs, a tackling machine at LB, and signed a top-10 corner.

We need to re-build the middle of our defense. We need:

2 DTs
2 LBers
2 Safeties
1 Corner

It's possible to land 3 impact starters, especially if they are picking inside the top 10, which is looking more likely as the season progresses.

The Giants Defense was one of the league worst last season, I believed they finished as the 30th ranked defense. They rank in the teens thus far this year.

-Just like the Cowboys, they have a brand new DC, new hybrid scheme, yet you don't hear from the players how complicated it is. Coming from a 3-4 front, the transition is somewhat easier, but still doesn't excuse the Cowboy failures.

-In the off-season, two fa signings have made a huge difference, signing a legitimate #1 CB in Bradberry and signing MLB Blake Martinez. Could the Cowboys find two impact starters to turnaround their unit?

-Giants have no pass rushers to speak of, yet they have more team sacks then the Cowboys. The biggest difference is that they are ranked #7 against the run, where the Cowboys are dead last at #32. This allows their defense more chances to rush the passer.

As I have stated before, it's clear how to fix our defense, have to get better at stopping the run, to have any chance of success.

By looking at the Giants, it just shows how quickly a defensive unit can be turned around. Hit on a few players and it could take place in a hurry.
Well the answer is elementary my friend.
You’ve brought up some good points
However, the Giants do not have a bunch of underperforming players with huge contracts.

They do however, have players that go all out on each and every play.

They also don’t have Jerrah and his idiot son running the team.
So while the Giants will continue to improve, this team will continue to explore the depths of the NFL’s bottom feeders

The Giants have a real GM and a defensive coordinator that does not suck.

They have 4 interior DL that would start over anybody on the Cowboys interior DL.

End of story.

The Giants don't have a delusional owner who thinks he is a great football mind making decisions as GM of the team.

Very easy answer:

Dexter Lawrence
Dalvin Tomlinson
Leonard Williams

Top 5 D front. It makes everything work.

Until we fix this, nothing we do will matter. Those "rushmen" don't stop the other team from going up the middle.

What did those 3 do against the Cowboys the first game between the teams this year?

The Giants have invested in their defense. Dallas has one first-round pick on its unit (LVE) and no significant free agents as far as investment goes.

Here's what we've got:

DE Aldon Smith (1st-rounder, out of football five years)
DT Antwuan Woods (undrafted)
DT Neville Gallimore (3rd-rounder)
DT Tyrone Crawford (3rd-rounder)
DE DeMarcus Lawrence (2nd-rounder)

LB Jaylon Smith (2nd-rounder)
LB LVE (1st-rounder)

CB Anthony Brown (6th-rounder)
CB Trevon Diggs (2nd-rounder)
S Xavier Woods (6th-rounder)
S Donovan Wilson (6th-rounder)

The Giants have two first-rounders and a second-rounder starting on their DL, one acquired through a trade; spent to get Martinez; spent to get Bradberry; traded for Peppers ...

If they stuck with just their draft picks, they'd be in just as bad of shape as us. Essentially, they have five first-round quality players on their defense and only drafted one of them.

We have two first-round quality players on our defense (and one has missed a lot of this season with injury).

The Giants draft and trade for D all the time. It's their focus. We draft/trade for WR's, CB's, and injured LB's. There's your difference.

Well, we blew our chance on the DL when we drafted Taco. It was that rare first-rounder we've spent on a DL (our first since 2007) and we whiffed.

Outside of that, we've mainly tried to outsmart other teams (Gregory, Hill) and it's mostly come back to bite us. Lawrence is really the only true success story, and he was about as close to a first-round pick as you can get.

The unwillingness of the Joneses to get creative to make up for not using first-rounders on DL and missing on those "smart" picks is why this defense has been what it's been. We've done a little more on the back end, but then outsmarted ourselves again by thinking any of the corners we had could replace Byron Jones, just because he's not a turnover machine.

However, losing Byron doesn't bug me as much as not building up the front with some bonafides. Linebackers and secondary don't matter much if you can't win up front regularly.

I am not claiming the defense will not suck but,

LVE is back from injury
Lee is back from injury and provides depth
Dlaw is getting healthy, and looks like he is improving
Diggs is getting more experience
Gregory is back, and he will get better
Awuzie is coming back, and will improve the defense
There are young dt's and lb'ers getting reps and experience

Lee will be back for two minutes and Awuzie will get burnt like toast as he always has. Dlaw and Diggs need to show up against a decent team before I get excited about them. I do think they improve by season's end...slightly.

You're trying to rate players on one game? No chit? Wow, that's weird.

I take it that those three were not so good that game. Must have been that awesome OL the Cowboys had that day. Who were the five OL again? How about refreshing my memory?

I guess those three were just awesome even though they lost 6 other games out of 7.

Those three Giant defensive linemen are such game changers. What is the Giants’ record with these three? 1-7.

Because the Giant's defensive coach isn't Mike Nolan.

And what was the reason we also were mediocre on defense under Marinelli, Richard, Kiffen, Ryan ... ?

In fact, the last time our defense was decent was right after we got Wade Phillips, which just happens to coincide with Parcells investing in it. We got Ware and Spears in the first round in 2005 to add to a first-round corner we drafted in 2003 (Newman). We drafted another first-round DL/OLB in 2007 in Spencer. We hit on some later-round picks (Canty, Ratliff and Hatcher. Then, when Parcells left, we let all that work unravel when we could have had an elite unit by the time the offense got going.

I'm not saying Nolan is a great defensive coach or any of those other guys. But if you're not giving them much to work with, you're not going to get great results even if you do have a great DC.

If the Giants had our offense when Dak was playing, they wouldn't be 1-7, they would be leading the division. They are not elite on defense, but have held three teams under 20 points and allowed more than 25 to just two. We scored the most points they've given up so far this year.

It’s the middle (mainly dt and especially safety) where we have consistently been week.

that being said if you go Into the offseason and focus your top picks on defense we can really change this thing in one offseason.

dlaw... LVE..... awuzie.... Diggs. Right there you have building blocks for a quality defense.
