I have certainly noticed that Dallas brings in coaches for jobs that are clearly bigger than they can handle:
- Dave Campo - maybe a good secondary coach at one point, but a head coach? Clearly not.
- Chan Gailey - a good offensive coordinator at various stops, given a head coaching role in Dallas. Didn't work out.
- Wade Phillips - a good defensive coordinator in multiple stops, but proven to not be head coaching material in several stops. What did Dallas hire him for? You guessed it, head coach.
- Jason Garrett - He wasn't even a coordinator before he arrived in Dallas. Not only was he gifted the coordinator role, but ultimately head coach as well. We certainly know how THAT worked out.
- Rod Marinelli - A defensive line coach who was not only the defensive coordinator here, but given final say over the draft? Yeah, that's why we got Taco instead of TJ Watt, and Trysten Hill over Juan Thornhill (or several other safeties).
The Gailey thing is what made the Garrett mistake drag on so long.
Jerry has said that one of his biggest mistakes was not giving Gailey more time...so he was hesitant to pull the trigger on Garrett thereafter.
One mistake snowballs into the next.
The drafts around the time of Gailey/Campo were SO awful, theres not a chance in the WORLD Gailey would have done any better if retained. Anyone can see and know that. Except one, who was the culprit behind thinking he can draft players on advice of Larry Lacewell, etc.
Again, more snowballs via not being able to admit mistakes.
That's exactly where the problem lies with this guy....his feelings about personal relationships and loyalty.
I'm a very loyal person, and I get where Jerry comes from at times....but it just doesnt work in his spot. He needs that middleman to do the right thing when needed. Not holding breath. In his mind, no one can do anything better than him.
