Tank talk, just listen to it this week

If you watched that replay at the end of the Jets-Raiders game, you know what tank talk is all about and it's going to get really loud this week.

Rodney Harrison is already calling for the HC and DC to be fired and he will be joined by many others. Doesn't even matter if they were ordered to lose games, they set this up for a lot of questions and maybe a few from the league office.

That was blatantly poor execution of tanking against a team still playing for a playoff spot and one game out of that 7th spot due to a team purposefully setting up a loss at the end of the game.

If that wasn't on purpose, they should both be fired for being stupidly incompetent.

I watched the game and it seems to me the DC just stupidly called a 0 blitz on the 4th down play (part of his DNA). They had been sending heavy blitz pressure most of the game. The DB bit on an out move and got torched for a TD. I agree the DC should be fired for the call. They will all be fired in a few weeks anyway.

The Jets want Lawrence or Fields and they won’t let meaningless wins get in the way.
Then they shouldn't have let that game come down to that as it became evident that play was about losing. The Raiders must have been some kind of bad in that game.

I only saw that part of the game but with a DC with Williams experience there is no other explanation. Now, what if that win helps put the Raiders in the playoffs and another team out?

The Jets feared the Jaguars was going to lose to the Vikings, which they should have won and blew it. But the Jets did not want to be in a tie for the top pick.
So they uncharacteristically blitzed and blew the play. May it seemed like on purpose, who knows. It was odd.

If we can feel there is a NFL conspiracy against or for certain teams with the refs gearing games, then we can believe this loss was on purpose. :muttley:

With his experience level, I think some hard questions are coming his way. For Dungy to become that shocked and almost angry, I am surprised he stopped short of accusing them of throwing the game.

What DC single covers the fastest player on the field on the last, and deciding, play of the game? One wanting to lose the game.

If that blitz gets home the game is over...carr did a perfect job of stepping up and delivering a beautiful pass....i know many will disagree but I wouldn’t call that play call blatant tanking....maybe overly aggressive or a dumb situational call
I could do that if not for a veteran DC like Gregg Williams with the fastest player on the field.

They'll never be able to prove that it was ordered to let the WR run by him. And as for the tanking itself, it's the winless Jets. They're winless for a reason.

Right

As a matter of fact the blitz could be considered a play call to win the game , not throw it.

Im not sure how a 31-28 result against a playoff contender is considered tanking? If they intended to lose why did it come down to one play?

I thought they played hard in a 31-28 loss. If they truly were intending to tank, why let the game come down to such a critical play. Doesn’t make sense.

I don’t understand your response coach, could you please clarify
Williams is a well respected DC in the NFL and a veteran of many games, many close games. He knows who the fastest player on the field, Ruggs is second only to Hill in WR speed, is and chooses to blitz and single that guy? That wasn't a mistake, that was on purpose. Ruggs was drafted to be that guy, the field stretcher, the deep ball guy and he gets singled on the critical play in the game?

That was textbook cover the back end and the sides and give them the middle and tackle short of the goal line. I am surprised Carr wasn't too shocked that he could make that throw. That was the last thing he expected to see. He was probably expecting a 3 man rush and max coverage but he sure as hell didn't expect single coverage on his deep threat.

That play is going make tanking the hot topic this week of sports radio and TV stations. The bottom line is that gives the Raiders a win they needed to stay at that 8th spot in the playoff race and the Pats and Ravens have good reason to be pissed.

Why would the Jets risk the game coming down to one play if they truly intended on tanking .

To me tanking is losing 35-0 not 31-28. Jets were obviously playing to win . Over analyzing one play.

If you’re going to throw a game why wait until such a critical point in the game?
That was what I thought and since I didn't watch the game, I wondered how cooperative the Raiders were being keeping the Jets in that top spot?

I don't know how anyone explains a DC with his rep and tenure making a bonehead play like that. A first year DC doesn't make that mistake. It is a convenient one because he's known as high risk and a blitz caller but even that doesn't excuse that call at that time.

Bonehead plays or calls are made all the time. Fans are reaching. If Jets are intent on tanking they don’t let the game come down to one critical play.

Look how many Bonehead decisions or calls McCarthy has made this year.

That one play is going to get over analyzed a lot this week as well as that HC and DC.

Think those watching that game from the league office didn't stand up and take notice of that?

I agree, it is a bizarre way to tank but this is the Jets. They can't even tank without being questioned.

Not the point, that win puts the Raiders in the 8th spot, ahead of BAL and NE, that's the point of the domino effect of tanking. And you can bet the owners of those two teams is talking to the league office first thing this morning.
