i

The Eagles still have every intention to keep Carson Wentz and have him be a major part of their team, sources told ESPN, even though the struggling QB has been benched in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts.

Expensive to keep Wentz, more expensive to trade Wentz, and even more expensive to cut Wentz in 2021.
The Eagles have little choice but to 'keep' him. Unless they just want to unload him in a trade and eat $34M, which is an extra $9M more than they would pay to keep him in 2021.

If I were the Eagles, I would look to trade him and eat the extra $9M for a total of $34M cap hit on 2021 for the QB position. Get it over with. Not sure what they could get in a trade. They might have to give up a pick just to get someone to trade for him.

They have to, they signed a deal that will kill their team if they cut him. I mean, people need to pay attention to what's going on in Philly and other places. This is what happens when you run your team with a "Pay The Man" mentality and remember, as bad as that contract looks in Philly right now, a deal with Dak would be worse if we went with a 4 year deal.

Of course they are. They have no choice.
His dead cap hit would be monsterous. Somewhere around $60M

The Eagles aren't "keeping" him. They are stuck with him

Brandon Allen began the season on the Bengals practice squad while staying at home, calling in by zoom.

This offseason the Eagles will tell Wentz that is their plan for him for next year so don't bother reporting to Training Camp.

In completely unrelated news, every GM in the NFL laughed out loud when the Eagles called them about a trade.

Well, if the Eagles called and offered to throw in one of their picks if I would take Wentz and his contract, I would definitely listen and not laugh.
Not saying that will happen.
Could be that Wentz's contract is really good after the Eagles eat all the guaranteed money. Wentz's base salary in 2021 is only $15M, 2022 is $22M, in 2023 is $20M, and in 2024 is $21M. Those are pretty good numbers for someone to take a chance. If he stinks in 2021, then he can be cut in 2022 with no dead cap money.

Fine with me having that much cap space sitting on the bench.

What else would they be expected to say with games left to play. Hurts is still an unknown.

The Eagles actually could do that, they would take a 20MM cap hit this year but they have 21MM in cap space (but its money they need to roll over).

I don't see anyone paying 15 Million a year for Wentz, especially in a cap year that is supposed to go down, but crazier things have happened. IMO they have to keep him on the roster, this is going to be a pretty delicious bit of schadenfreude to watch as a Cowboys fan.

Did I mention to get Wentz the Eagles traded a #1, #2, #3, #4 and a future #1 that was used on Deshaun Watson?
