Don't know if you've been following this but the thinking that a captive audience would be a ratings bonanza has not happened and in fact the TV nets are doing make goods and discounting the rates because of the 25% drop in viewership. It was off almost 50% on Thanksgiving. This is unheard of to be discounting rates on the NFL.

In case you haven't noticed, the commercial load has increased and the same tired ATT, Progressive, State Farm, Toyota ads are hard to avoid along with every prescription drug with s=ide effects as bad as what they're designed for. It is overkill to the point of really being interested in the game to stay with it. I find myself drifting and checking out what's going on elsewhere.

There are several reasons floating out there, one of which we cannot discuss here, but I do not think this is temporary, I think the NFL and the nets are going to have to adjust to what I think the real enemy is, choices. And I have seen some ad men addressing this as the challenge.

TV nets don't usually try to counter NFL programming and in fact will promote games on other nets but the new kids on the block, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Hulu, Peacock and HBO MAX don't have to worry about that, they just keep cranking out the productions. And advertising them during the games.

It does sound logical that live sports would get a boost with a stay at home audience but all of them were off and not just by a little, MLB. NBA, NHL were in the dumpster. And the once impervious NFL joined them and with TV deals coming up tied to the cap, this will be most interesting to see where this goes.

Some will say this is temporary. Like some said the NFL ratings would go through the roof. I don't think so.

I've stopped watching nfl games unless the Cowboys are on locally. And it is because the nfl product is hot garbage. Also I honestly find myself more entertained watching something on Hulu, Netflix or any form of Hockey. I wasn't a Hockey fan until about 8 years ago. that sport if you give it a chance is far better to watch than the nfl product. Also the amount of great tv shows/ entertainment is really amazing. Peaky Blinders is my all time favorite show. I would watch that show over anything.

Nobody watches live tv anymore. It has nothing to do with politics or whatever crap people with questionable agendas want to believe so bad.

We’re in the Netflix era
ravens browns not entertaining? i mean for two great defenses to look porous was it great offense? seems like an epic battles from the media responses..

Nice post CC.

I'd like to add that the little trick of keeping games close (and eyes on it from home) is obvious to everyone.

Theres no other reason for the league to not use the same technology fans have to get calls right.

They want to control it, and it's awful how great a role refs play in the outcome all too many times.

It's a bad product and not everyone is continually fooled.

This is a good article discussing it.

So the NFL ratings have dropped during the last 3 elections. As people are focusing on other things or watching more news etc. the drop this season was less than the drop in 2016 during the election.

News networks ratings were through the roof leading up to November 3rd.

Also the NFL earlier in the year had to compete against the NHL playoffs and NBA playoffs which it normally doesn’t.

I think overall the drop has been slight but really not unmanageable long term.

I personally doubt ratings drop is a long term problem for the NFL. Especially given other revenue sources that are growing. This includes gambling.

The NFL is going to make a ton of money off legal gambling alone going forward.

It will be interesting to see how the NFL handles this going forward. Sure, it would be easy to simply blame the decline on current events. I am of a mind, however, that the drop in viewership is more systemic in nature -- quality of product on the field, politicization of sports in general, oversaturation and, dare I mention, the pampered and tolerated nature of the modern sports star -- and will not likely rebound without fundamental changes to the game itself.

Eyes are getting opened. One of my best buds had always made fun of me when I pointed out to him how they make calls to keep games close. And then he watched the 2017 AFC champ game. The refs did everything in their power to not have a JAX/PHILLY super bowl. It was blatant. Every time poor Bortles made a play, twwwwweeeeetttttt. And the D. A D that had 5 penalties called against it all year, suddenly had 6 in one game? I mean, they suddenly forgot how to play? It was stupid bad.

And then, of course, the NO non call. That exposed it to everyone. Suddenly, the ones arguing against it started sounding just feeble.

I wish they'd go back to the college refs. Hey, maybe they missed a call or two, but let me tell you, the officiating was simply much more honest.

Some people show an interest in sports, follow it and are fans to get away from politics and social subjects. I can tell you for a fact that a large amount of folks have been turned off for that reason alone.

when the nfl became all about money and gambling and fanatsy it was on its way down you can tell that games are fixed with the how the games are officiated a blind man can almost see it the nfl is not about football any more its about MONEY

When fans are allowed to return to games at full capacity, things will improve.
In 5 years, if not 3 or 4, the 2020 seasons will be an afterthought in all sports, just as strikes have been forgotten.

How many NHL fans are back, or new ones after a cancelled season, NBA and MLB with their issues. NFL survived 2 strikes, a 9 game season and the scab games.

I have a friend that stopped watching games, because of all the issues, but even last season he mainly watched only Cowboys games. He will not admit it, but I believe his main reason this season was he cancelled his cable TV. As he still makes his comments, watches the news and now watches the condensed games on you tube.

Take politics out of sports and the numbers will go up. Don't need an MBA from Yale to figure it out.
Take the brutal officiating out of it and watch the numbers go up.

Numbers have been in decline, however since that horrible call in the LA New Orleans game ratings have really taken a turn for the worst.
