Not sure if this has been posted before, but Smith isn’t as non-expendable as people think.

https://sportdfw.com/2020/10/06/dallas-cowboys-jaylon-smith-is-more-expendable-than-you-think/

With a cap cost of $7.771 million this year, Jaylon’s dead money impact would balloon to $23.971 million if cut today. That’s too big to digest. But next season things clear up a bit and cutting Smith would actually offer a $400,000 savings (that’s with $9.4M in dead money).

After the 2021 season, cutting him saves a whopping $5M! In other words, if Dallas wants to move on this winter they could cut him if they were open to eating his 2021 salary. And there’s virtually no reason to keep him beyond the 2021 season unless he significantly changes course. So the Dallas Cowboys aren’t quite as “stuck” as they seem.

I think Jaylon will be on the roster next season, I do think the 23 mill is not a figure the Cowboys are willing to swollow, anything beyond next season will do'able pending on his play in 2021

This has been posted.....I don't think its gotten bad enough to where they'd cut Jaylon. The people who have a issue with Jaylon are some fans...based on what McCarthy and Jerry has been saying....they don't seem to mind him.

If LVE was not made of glass, I think they would move on. Let’s see what they do in the draft. (Parsons/Collins)

Here's the thing, the pro-Jaylon crowd says Jaylon is too valuable to cut and back that up with stats like the number of tackles he racks up. It's true, Jaylon has among the highest total in tackles in the league. It's undeniable.

But where is he making these tackles in relation to the line of scrimmage? This is what Jaylon fans don't understand. Most of his tackles are made 5 to 6 yards deep on his side of the line of scrimmage. This matters!

His cap hit is 9.8 for 2021. If cut before the 5th day of the new "year" of 2021, his dead cap is 9.4mil.
His salary is guaranteed for 2021/22 if he is on the roster on the 5th day of that season. So, they would need to act quickly if they want to part ways.

Cutting him in 2021 is a waste of resources. Playing him cost you 400k, for that he can ride the bench if we actually have a better option. This is the perfect time to see if we can draft/groom a replacement for 2021 and then cut jaylon in 2022. I view him almost like Lee the last 2 years, just an insurance policy in case of injury.

His contract isn't getting touched and he isn't getting cut.

Why would he be? Lack of production?

They just paid Tyrone Crawford 9 million dollars for what you just saw this past season.

I am pro Jaylon. The issue is not he makes tackles down the field. The problem is he is paid like a top 5 linebacker and the second best player on the defense. He is no where near that. You can’t have him out there being a liability against a simple swing pass. 2018 Jaylon was a playmaker and game changer. This guy the last two season plays like he is Jerry’s chosen one.

True, but Jerry will insist he starts.

There's no other explanation for running a guy like that out there.

I mean.....not being a playmaker is one thing, but this guy is actually a liability. He makes the team worse.

How is it that most fans see it but the staff cannot.

The results suggest we are right. Really, what else gives?

Yea, I wouldn't bet on him being cut, especially with no real fallback plan for his spot at the moment.

They get stuck on certain players based off "leadership" or they simply like them, cap & play be damned.
