Do you know how good you have to be to fail in your third Super Bowl in four years?

It sounds to me like the Cowboys have two guys (McCarthy and Quinn) who know a little about winning on their coaching staff, and they have recently taken the spots of guys who did not know nearly as much. You can tell me that they needed incredible players to get there. I agree. Every coach does. Quinn and McCarthy do not have magic spells and enough sleight of hand to replace the talent deficiency this defense surely has. But you cannot add that in January. It arrives in the spring.

Let me say it again, despite the overall cynicism: I am not saying Quinn is a great head coach or a great GM. But if you are looking for someone who understands how to coordinate a championship defense, you have one in Dan Quinn. There is a very long list of excellent coordinators who were not excellent head coaches. It happens. That doesn’t mean this pairing will automatically work, but in a world where there was literally nobody they could hire who would be better, I suggest we take a deep breath and enjoy a solid move for once.

Someone who has been to the SB in recent history, regardless of what happened there, is a huge leap forward for a team that has not even made it to the NFC championship in over two decades. Will that success translate to this team is yet to be seen as Jerrah will keep meddling and is not going anywhere. He can choke up all he wants trying to prove that he wants to win. Even if he does wants to win, he just does not know how to.

Sturm also liked the Mike McCarthy hire.

Sturm has gone from an analyst to an old fart that only talks about resumes. This time a year ago Sturm was saying Anthony Davis (NBA) wasn't very good because of his resume. Now that he won a title with Lebron he's a top 5 player.

Agree! And agree with all below. I’ve stuck up for those...myself included...who are old school, long time fans, who will complain from time to time about our circumstances. Garrett did suck and wasted 10 yrs. BUT I don’t support just general non-stop crying snd whining regarding every move. If a top coordinator is out there, they have a job already. So that leaves us with guys who were coordinators and had some down times and green/raw D assistants. We grabbed a known. I’m fine with it. If he even gets us to mediocre I’d celebrate. I don’t agree with all Sturm says..he can get too stuck in his thoughts and can be pompous but overall he knows a lot more about the league than many. I’m more worried about talent on that side of the ball

What's not to like since we have yet to see his D even put together, let alone play?

Why the rush to judgment on every hire? Want to get out in front on the bashing early and beat the crowd.

Quinn knows what a championship D looks like and the pain of losing leads. He has experience that could prove vital. He also knows the crucial part that talent plays and I assume he was assured they will be addressing that. He was expected to recreate the SEA D in ATL without the talent. The ATL owner is all about follow the ball as much as the DAL owner is.

One good thing, his players all seem to like and respect him, which is more than we can say about Nolan. That "my way or the highway" doesn't play too well in today's player friendly NFL.

He badly needs help through this draft - this is not a good D as presently constructed.

You need good players to be successful. Ask belichik. Cam wasn't brady 2.0. The road to the big dance requires a good defense.
And not 8 players, including the anchor of his front 7, Hightower, and anchor of his secondary, Chung. opting out before the season started. The S position is critical to any Belichick defense and Hightower was his QB on a D that demands a smart QB.

Getting Newton was a huge mistake as it would have been for any team but what choice did he have? NE had a bad season but he's still the best I've ever seen.

And there is not a lot of apparent help in this draft and the Cowboys aren't early players in FA, they prefer the leftovers.

I think they're going to end up keeping some FA players because of the shallow draft in D.

The question is what is expected of Quinn in his first season as DC? Do the Joneses really think they've stocked this team with a lot of D talent or are they just spinning?

Quinn has to be better then Nolan? Right?:omg:
I'd say yes since this was the worst D in the league and worst in team history and the DC has to catch some heat for that.

The mistake was changing the system this past off season. McC says he wants Moore back for continuity and stability and then hires a DC to change the D system with a bunch of square pegs? Just what this team needs, a heavy leaning offensive HC to go with the FO. Enablers all over the place.
