Arthur Jones wasted little time in replacing Dan Quinn's scheme in Atlanta and has tempted Dean Pees out of retirement. I thought this quote from Pees was interesting

In my opinion this is what we should be doing not going backwards. How creative are we actually going to be? Are teams going to zone in on our weak spots? How multiple will we actually be? My main concern is that we draft/sign players that are not able to play multiple schemes.

Well right now it's just talk. If he doesn't get the talent to run a 3-4/4-3 look effectively he'll have performances like Mike Nolan.

Atlanta has some talent here and there on their defense, but their edge rushers have been a weak spot ever since Vic Beasley's rookie year(IIRC). They may lose Neal to FA, and some of their recent drafts have looked like ours.

To me what's interesting is that the head coach has gone in there and decided to go in a different direction. I suspect Pees will be given the time to sort this out over a number of years. Clearly Jones cannot be addressed with what he has seen

Didn't we want to be creative with nolan? didn't the players complain that it was too complicated and they were getting confused and missing assignments out there?

Yes, but I don't believe we should scrap the philosophy. Just go about it in a different way

No matter what we all may think, I coaches scheme is only as good as the players that are in it. That's why, if I were scouting for any team, instincts and motor would outweigh pure talent any day. I think we've all seen our share of extremely talented individuals NOT make it in this league.

"They should worry more about our personnel than they should worry about our scheme."

The most important part of the Dean Pees statement. The Cowboys FO needs to let Quinn choose his type of player and then make sure they get those types of players. Improve the personnel on all three levels of defense especially down the middle of the defense (NT/1Tech, MLB and FS).

If we pulled a 71 yeard old coordinator out of retirement to coach here, no one would be happy to hear that. Remember the Monte Kiffin debacle?

I get that you are talking more about being multiple then the actual coach but Nolan wanted to do a lot of the same things and we failed miserably.

The Falcons fans on very pleased with the hire, because Pees has done it before and had success

I agree Players first, but good quality, intelligent players can play in multiple schemes.

Yeah what Pees is talking about is going to take some time to implement....Cowboys are just trying to have a defense that isn’t legendary bad. Every DC wants to do the same thing. All disagree how to get there though so we shall see.

Yeah, this is what Nolan said too. It's one thing to say, 'we're going to be the most mysterious defense ever!!!1' and quite another to actually make it all work

Right idea, wrong person. Pees actuall coordinated good defenses recently. Nolan would be a good coach if this was 2012. Offenses are completely different now and he couldnt keep up.
