No way in hell I'd play it that close......in fact, I'm settling this once and for BEFORE the draft. If you wait until after the draft most, if not all, QB needed team would have their guy. Meaning a trade becomes that much harder. Now fast forward to the July 15 deadline to either sign the tag or wait until after the 2021 season. Knowing we will NOT tag him a 3rd time ( $55M) our leverage goes to zero coz at that time Dak and his will/can simply either pay me what I want or I walk and you get ZERO compensation.

If his agent continuing to play hardball, IMO you have to trade him before the draft. Get what you can and draft his replacement.

We have seen this play out in the past, perhaps the deadline for the team would be prior to the draft. If still unsigned, they look at other options.

I would love to see an intelligent, objective analysis on the QB carousel. What teams are looking for QB's? What QB's are available?

I'm not in tune with the league enough to do a good job. My random guesses:

QB's available:
Draft - Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Lance, Jones, Trask
Trade - Watson, Stafford, Darnold?, Minshew?, Wentz? Garropolo?
FA - Trubisky, Dalton, Dak?

Teams looking:
Detroit, Houston, NE, NYJ, Jax, SF, Ind

IMO, the QB carousel is starting to get full of QB's. There is a lot of talent coming into the league. A lot of Justin Herberts and that trend has radically changed the equation at QB.
2021: Off-season of the QB - big changes for that position in the three transaction arenas - trades, free agency, the draft.

49ers or Colts make a ton of sense.

Also, never underestimate John Elway's ability to overpay for a QB.

They're obviously looking for the most they can get, so it's going to be a bit tougher for teams like the Colts and Patriots as opposed to the Broncos and Panthers. Someone's probably giving up a lot for him.

Good point. But severe back injuries are hard to overcome playing football.
He broke his tailbone in 2019. He had started 136 consecutive games before that. He started all 16 games since returning.

Now he had injuries that he's played through, but outside of breaking bones in his tailbone while scrambling in the 4th quarter of game in 2019 and a nagging shoulder joint injury his first two years, he shows up.

The Sports Injury Predictor website (you use this a lot for scouting reports if you attend The Scouting Academy):
https://sportsinjurypredictor.com/player/matthew-stafford/2

...predicts there is an 11% chance of injury (missing at least 2 quarters) in 2021.

One of the best arms in football IMO.

I'm not advocating Stafford over Dak. But, if this team decided they can't sign Dak long-term, Stafford would be my #1 target.

Does anyone really want the Jones yahoos drafting what will likely be the 5th best QB in 2021 at pick #10?

Would the Lions accept Dak in a trade for Stafford straight up? Just curious about this hypothetical question.
Some people say Dak is worth two 1st round picks. Yet, I don't think the Lions would accept a Dak for Stafford trade.
Interesting scenario

Agreed.

Rare circumstances that a QB his caliber is available.

Peyton Manning? Coming off an injury that he had to go to another country to get repaired. Plus, Colts knew they had Luck coming.

Drew Brees? Shoulder injury and the Chargers just added Philip Rivers.

Tom Brady? A hundred.

The only thing that hurts the Lions is they have little leverage. Stafford has a $10M roster bonus that they (not the new team) has to eat if he isn't traded by a certain date. Plus, everyone now knows the Lions are trying to trade him. Still, I agree that he will have multiple suitors and there will be a bit of a bidding war.

Dak at 40m vs Stafford at 20m ?
Would have money for defense with the extra 20m

Congratulations Matt Stafford for getting out of Detroit! Best spots for Stafford to land:
1) Colts - good OL, Top RB, decent WRs
2) WFT - emerging RB, good WR1, TE
3) Bears - 2 revenge games a year
4) Patriots - on the decline?
5) Panthers - not ready to win
.
One note is, if Stafford goes to a team with WR issues both his former starting WRs are on the market. Example: A team like WFT getting Stafford and Kenny Golladay to pair with McLaurin. Or Marvin Jones Jr. with T.Y. n Pittman Jr. in Indianapolis.
Good take

It's not that simple though.

You aren't just giving up the trade value Dallas would want for Dak. You have to turn around and pay him around $34M per year.

A team wanting to trade for Dak is giving up major cap room and major assets.

Oh, I'm absolutely sure they would, unless they already have someone specific in their sights.

If the Lions are willing to trade Stafford straight up for Dak, Jerry needs to sign that deal as quickly as he can. Trades can be made and announced but nothing is official until 17 March.

No way Lions make that trade. They would be absolutely nuts.
