Why do we suck so bad in free agency?

Because you get what you pay for. The guys we sign every offseason and then eventually cut, nobody ever wants.

LOL...Gotta love nepotism. Makes people feel "worthy" of where they are sitting even if they are far from it, been that way all through history.

No doubt, he had a pic of Stephen Jones looking like a king in his office...

Agree.

I like Jones, but he was in no way worth what we'd have had to pay him.
Not at all....loved Byron at his contract last year....and I get re-signing him but making him the highest paid corner in the league? Naw...I can't. At that price I no longer like Jones on this team.

Our defense was bad because it didn't generate turnovers. Byron was a big part of that because he didn't generate turnovers. It wasn't historically bad though. Not like this unit. This defense needs a Aaron Donald on it. A TJ Watt....not a Brandon Carr or a Byron Jones IMO.

Our defense was bad because it didn’t generate turnovers and couldn’t stop the pass or the run. Even when we generated some turnovers the last few games of the season our defense still wasn’t good. Byron Jones didn’t generate turnovers but he could cover and didn’t allow receivers to run past him. He prevented a lot of plays from being made against us. He was a lot better than Brandon Carr who routinely got beat.

Drafting is all fine and dandy, we don’t even do that well....

But we are flat out terrible in free agency...get cheap scrubs of whom many don’t even make the team or get cut after a few games
I would disagree about not drafting well …

As for why we don't do well in free agency, it's largely because we don't put much focus on it outside of our own free agents.

Y'al give Byron too much credit. Byron benefitted highly from playing alongside younger talent who got attacked more than him so he got less targets his way. That doesn't equate to "shutting down his side of the field". Because we saw this year what happens when you put Byron alongside someone like Xavien Howard.....

Mind you that Dolphins defense to me is better than we've had in a long time especially generating turnovers....You fall into at rap getting the Byron Jones of free agency. Thankfully for the Dolphins they have Xavien Howard as well. It will not shock me at all as soon as the Dolphins can get from under Byron's contract they will cut him.

Not going to spend a day on this I gave you my opinion. Seems like you want to go from one argument to another.

You think in the past 7 or 8 years they've invested in enough 1st round defensive talent? I'm jut confused...so is the objective to hope and pray that all 2nd or 3rd round picks end up being 1st round talents? Praying and hoping for that is going to have you lacking in talent.
You're literally not processing anything I'm saying ????

in the last six drafts they've drafted four players that they have a first round grade on and then the two drafts that they did not the first open pick went to defense and the #34 pick went defense

I don't know how you're not understanding what I'm trying to say ? You are running your mouth about how if they don't draft high on defense this is the result and I told you they have drafted high it's just all these picks didn't work out

i get it and agree its not that they arent trying just missing on players some due to injury and other well mr marinelli swayed the drafts..so we got hill in the 2nd round with no first round pick do he was the top pick, taco, etc

hopefully this changes starting this year..

Two problems face the Cowboys. The poor evaluation of players on the team and the poor evaluation of available players in FA and the draft unless they're 1st round OL.

The GM is a follow the ball person so the defense will take a back seat to the seat filling story making offense. He considers the last draft a success because of flash and splash with a high profile rookie WR.

The other problem he has is selling himself that he is doing a good job and evaluating himself as he does the players. He is incapable of truly evaluating his team building shortcomings. He does exactly what some do here. The minute they're drafted or signed, they become better because they're Cowboys. He goes one step further, they are better because they are his.

The greatest self sell done here is that they are even good at drafting. They are average, at best, and have lucked into the last two QB1's or who knows what this team would look like.

What other GM have you seen hire an unknown to him coach in a 12 hour interview? That should tell you all you need to know.

The simple answer to why don't they win, why aren't they any better in FA and the draft is that they don't have to win at anything but in ratings and revenue. That is all that matters to him and his shining example of the pitfalls of nepotism.

To your point, "Glitz and Glamor" is not a strategy...

And what don't you understand about they haven't drafted high on defense? What are you not comprehending? The last time they had the 4th overall pick they took a running back. Prime example of drafting for defense there. Just forget it I don't even like your energy right now just go ahead and argue with the wall its fine.

Because Will McClay has no idea how to build a team. He gets this pass because he can hit on some picks (every GM can do this) but in terms of consistency, he's not good. But for some reason, so many glorify him in this fanbase. What exactly has he really done, though?

We still pass up way too many obvious choices that would improve our team dramatically.

First it's "they haven't invested in 1st rounder talent" when they actually have in 4 out of the last 6 drafts and now it's "they haven't invested in high first round talent". Investment has been there it just hasn't stuck

Don't get all butthurt with me, I'm not with the whole snarky "I mean when you don't invest 1st rounders this is what you get". I was merely pointing out that a funny wise aleck statement to make considering they have drafted 1st rounders on defense

Interesting thoughts.
I think you need to actually look back at the last few years drafts and then you'll see that they have been drafting Defense high.
Quite a bit.

Yeah I don't even know why he was being snarky in regards to defensive draft ("I mean when you don't invest 1st rounders this is what you get"). 1st round grade defensive players have been taken in literally 4 of the last 6 drafts and the 2 drafts that did not feature 1st round talent on defense the result was #34 pick being defense and the 1st available pick being defense

I'm a bit confused as to why investment would even be brought up as a problem ?

What is your definition of high? Because to me high is a 1st rounder.....do you consider the 19th overall pick to be high in LVE? Or whatever pick Taco was?

Because there is a lack of talent on defense here.....if you consider investing a 2nd round pick in Hill and Gregory or a late round on Taco to be considered premium picks then so be it. I tend to disagree.

Nothing "wise aleck" about that statement if you got tight about it that's on you. To me a 4th overall pick like they had in Zeke is a premium pick. A late 1st round like in Byron Jones and Taco is not premium to me. Tyron Smith is a premium pick. Zeke was a premium pick. I'd even say 10th overall this year is a premium pick.

I just don't see it on the defense......I see it all over the offense.......
