Ranking the "short list" for Single High Free Safeties

We need Parsons on the team and we win the NFC’s east the next 3 years.

You never want to over draft to fill a need, see Taco. Moehrig might be the best safety prospect, but he isn't a 1st rd valued player. In your scenario, best coarse of action would be, trading back taking a player and then try to trade up from 44 to land the safety. The 3rd rd comp could get it done and you would still have another 2nd rd pick from the prior trade.

Gallup has little value in a deep WR class, why would anyone trade for him when they can get a similar player that they can control for several years, where they would have to pay him after next season? I still don't believe the team has ruled out resigning him just yet, either. Probably best to keep him and let it play out, if they decide to move on, they will get that comp pick back.
 
Gallup is solid and I think has a 2nd round value, but I wouldn’t part with him I would cut Cooper

If they resign Woods early in FA, then you just choose another team to root for cause you will know they have no clue.

let's debate. your point is valid but I think there is another viewpoint that is also valid. it all depends on the organizations view of themselves.

there is some elite talent at the top but by the second round are you really getting a player that you can definitively say is better than Gallup? Draft pick may or may not work out or may take a few years to really contribute. He needs to clean up the drops no doubt but he has coveted abilities.
there is no receiver in the 2nd round that has three years NFL experience. there is validity to going after a known commodity.
you can't discount a team that believes their window is open who wants an experienced player to complement their other players or to replace someone they lost. both teams in the SB bring deep receiving depth to the field.
there has been debate as to Gallup being a #1 receiver if Cooper wasn't here. another team might think he can be and thus paying a second & signing him to a contract of a #2 could be a very team friendly deal if he plays more like a #1 for them.

Gallup is a good receiver, but nobody believes he is a #1 receiver nor ever will be. The passing offense without Cooper in Gallup's rookie season was terrible. A 2nd round pick is usually a day 1, impact starter in which the team who drafts him has 4 years of low, controllable salary.

For instance, Tee Higgins was drafted 33rd overall last yr (top of rd 2), and signed a total contract total of 8.6 million for 4 seasons. Randall Cobb got paid 9 million a season with the Texans. It's a huge difference from the cap perpective. I don't believe there will be much of a difference between Gallup and a 2nd rd pick talent wise, but salary cap wise would be tremendous difference.

Maybe a team would do more a player for player deal in which both are in their last years of their contracts, but getting a premium pick is highly unlikely.

But you can’t pass on Moehrig or Grant if they are there. Unless they commit to a multi year deal with a guy like Kazee

They are going to try to cover themselves prior to the draft. It's very likely it's going to be Woods or a similar low level signee.

agreed. if they don't at least make efforts for it to be someone else, it tells me they aren't really understanding the issue.

i think a lot of people view him as a high end 2 that could develop into a 1.
i understand the salary advantage of a rookie but a number of rookie WR's drafted in round 2 this year didn't make any noticeable impact. again, just saying that the teams situation could influence how they view drafting versus known player.

Just to cover themselves at the position prior to the draft. Keeping Woods around for depth, wouldn't stop them from taking a high safety prospect.

It's happened before, I remember the Patriots traded for Wes Welker for a 2nd rd pick, but not sure if his contract was up in a year. I don't think Gallup is as good as a Wes Welker, nor a Brandon Cooks for was also traded.

Don't disagree, just telling you what I think they will do, based on their recent history.
