I have been saying it for about 10 days here that insiders are estimating the cap at $180M this year. 2022 is a complete unknown right now. Another year without fans in attendance and another shrinking tv market, and the 2022 cap may be worse. The league had to put a ceiling in to cover up their true hit on revenue. A lot of people think the new tv contracts in 2023 will save the NFL. I don't think so. Young people just are not into the NFL and football. The average age of NFL fans is in the fifties. Advertisers want the younger age groups who spend like drunken sailors. Redzone is also killing the tv viewership. Yes, the NFL gets money for people subscribing to Redzone but loses money as people would rather watch the Redzone than whatever game is on network tv. Amazon/Apple/Big Tech might be able save the NFL since Amazon doesn't care about losing money on a network deal and just wants to kill the competition from the networks. Amazon can afford to bid much more than the networks because Amazon has money to burn and will write off a big loss. Amazon can outbid the other networks by a billion or two and not even blink an eye or care. The networks like CBS and NBC can't turn a profit if they have to bid an extra billion or two to compete with Amazon and deal with a declining viewership and lower advertising rates. We are going to find out soon.

Stinks to compete for a house with someone who has all cash and money to burn.

If the tv networks lose out to Big Tech on the next tv contract, their only other option to compete may be to move some college football to compete on Sundays.
Yeah, riiiiiiiight. “Look at me” Prove it Ninja or shut the hell up.

I dont see it. if that is the case take what Dallas has now contracts on teh books and add 37.7m to it. I don't think they have enough current cap, if its 185m, to absorb 37.7m for 1 player and sign FA and draft picks and such to fill out the roster.
You make a great point. I forgot about how the Cowboys don't have any cap space. Doh!

Ok, I rescind my original post and now state the Cowboys and Dak will come to a mutually agreed upon contract which would enable the Cowboys to make some room to keep or sign other players for 2021.

But...I also read somewhere that the Cowboys could overpay beyond their cap limit this 2021 upcoming season while borrowing from future caps? I could be wrong. Did anyone else hear this? If this ends up being true, I will stand by what I initially posted.

The borrowing from future caps is a rumor that has been floated how that will be structured is still unknown.

Does anyone know what day they have to make this decision? I would think they would have to do it quickly since the league starts March 17 I believe this year.

Come on guys. Wake up. This is all speculation until the NFL comes out and says the salary cap as fact. You guys will believe anything you read or hear on the internet. You embarrass yourselfs. Now this may turn out to be true but to act like it’s fact is embarrassing yourselves.

Last I heard was that it might not be finalized until a few days before the beginning of FA. They have to wait for the final numbers to come in, discuss it among owners, and then discuss it with NFLPA. All that takes time.

The gimp hasn't taken into the effect of his cobbled back together ankle. It's not just a little twisted ankle, and I bet he's not going to be running anymore.

"Expect more short-term deals from veterans, who will look to land a more lucrative contract the following season when the salary cap inevitable explodes."

My question is this based solely on the recently signed streaming deals or actual viewership? Are they expecting more fans to watch the games than currently do?

It is based on that, the new gambling revenue, the additional week added, the increased player share of revenue, and the new TV deals.

That 175M is still way below pre-pandemic numbers. Problem now is Dak wants a pre-pandemic contract valuation.

Because it’s a literally a one off before the cap explodes to the 225m range which is what EVERYONE knows will happen

But he threw for 400 yards and look at his stats....his stats.....his nice shiny stats....but not the W-L record that's a team stat so it doesn't count even though he is part of the team and is demanding a lions share of the team's salary cap be allotted to him.

Ummm no, everyone does not know it will happen. There is no guarantee that next season will see stadiums back at full capacity even with the vaccines, especially given the new COVID strains that are not covered by said vaccines.

Whatever people think regarding Prescott, he really shouldn't be signed on the tag again unless it's to trade him. To give up over 37 million in cap space to one player just isn't smart business. That would equate to 20% of salary cap space on one player.

They are covered, they are just only 60% effective versus 94% just to make sure people reading don’t get confused (this is also more than enough preventative measure).

Now as for returning to normal, I am to trust the economists and plans that are already laid out versus random person on forums. So I guess I should have qualified it as “Every person who is paid money to analyze and predict future NFL income knows the cap will explode next year.”
