(Disclaimer: this is a long and somewhat pointless rant. I'm just in the ranting mood today.)

I'm 33 and was 7 the last time the Cowboys were in an NFC Championship game. I grew up about 2 hours east of Dallas and absolutely loved Troy, Emmitt, Michael, Moose, Newton, Tueni, et (yes, even as a 7 year old my dad made sure I knew about the linemen), etc. To me, those players were The Cowboys. The closest I've come to that as an adult was rooting for Romo, Witten, and Dez, and now Dak, Zeke, and Amari. As much as I root for the star I root for the players I love who have invested in the star. I'd much rather Dak stay here, continue to grow/improve, and win a Super Bowl than I would somehow acquire a QB like, say, Russell Wilson, even though I know Russell is better than Dak right now, and win a ring. And that's simply because Dak has earned my love and loyalty as the QB for the team I love. These days it feels like many fans would be fine if we cut every player on the team and an entirely different group of players won a SB wearing the star that year, and then half of those players move on the next year. In fact, many fans advocate for that. How is that fun? Wouldn't you rather root for the players on the roster to grow, bounce back, become elite, etc., instead of constantly trying to replace them?

I hate that the cap and the way the markets are now is forcing teams to keep players for shorter windows. I also hate that it's turned almost every fan into an armchair GM and makes us over-critical of players because of how tight the cap is to where many fans seem to root for them to fail so that they can justify moving on from them. It's also, IMO, made it where many players don't have the seething hatred for opposing teams they used to because everyone is so focused on being professional and getting paid in the current system that they are willing to play for any team that will pay them. I'm not saying that's wrong but my point is that it feels like a lot of players and fans have lost sight of what it is to root for a team and to have loyalty to a franchise. And yes, I know the teams are as cutthroat with the players as the players are with the teams, so I'm in no way blaming players. But rivalries are what make sports great, and those feel rarer and rarer. I'm not saying rivalries don't exist and I'm not saying fans don't still root for players but it just feels watered down compared to what it used to be. Maybe it's the internet, maybe it's because I'm an adult, or maybe Risen Star and Ranching have finally broken my spirit, lol.

I completely understand the purpose of the cap. I'm probably just complaining because it would be better for the Cowboys if Jerry could just throw money at everything instead of having to make calculated and correct decisions to build a winning team under the current confines of the league since he'll never hire a GM.

What would you do to "fix" this? I'd allow teams to designate 10 players as salary cap exempt. Let them pay whomever whatever they want to retain them. Then subject the remaining 43 players to the cap. Or, I would let teams have the cap plus 15% of their overall merchandise sales. You want them to sign Dak? Go buy some jerseys. Again, I understand the need for the cap but I think the league should try to find a way to let teams retain more than just 3-5 players long-term.

I would like to see a lesser percentage of against the cap for players you drafted. It would allow teams to retain players they want to keep and pay them. Going outside FA you would take the full cap hit on that player

We stink. I want to see special rules put in place so that the Cowboys can actually complete against other real franchises.

Lol, that's probably really what I'm trying to say too. If the cap were taken away or abated a bit then Jerry can just write checks to solve all of the problems. Or at least not be so damn cheap in FA and get these bottom of the barrel players.

To start off with I've always been against the cap. It was started because of two teams, the packers and browns. In actual businesses there is nothing stopping them from paying their employees as much as they want and it should be like that in sports too, but it's not. Your idea of making 10 players cap exempt sounds good.

You are right about the players not having the same dislike for players on rival teams as they once did and that is because players may end up playing on those teams when their contract is up and they don't want to anger a possible future team mate.

I agree but would only add I hated FA. Never wanted it, I like seeing a team built through the draft and guys playing most if not their entire career with each other.

Yet players come and go and I remain a Cowboys fan. I admit there are players on other teams that I am a fan of, I enjoy watching them perform but as being a fan of this Cowboys organization I have been 1 since 1965 watching many players come and go over that period.

They need some type of soft cap, or exemption for the QB's the way it is going. But limit it somewhat also, to a % of the cap. Then keep all the stuff the same. Also only count it against the top 47 players. Since 6 are inactive each week, that is my only reason for saying 47. The amount those players make is a moot point. As it is the top 47 players that count against the cap. Therefore leaving teams to keep players. As those players are usually on minimum type salaries anyway. That way it frees up that minimum times 6 to use plus the QB pay. Well use part of the QB pay against the cap, say like the 1st 25 million.
Yes there are QB's making less than that, so give the team a credit if under that number.

Just throwing stuff out there if it makes sense or not. Maybe someone can get an idea from it.

Of course it is a bit of both. I liked Demarcus Ware, DeMarco Murray, Cole Beasley as well as some others but I did not stop being a Cowboys fan when they were no longer here.

I've been a Cowboys fan since the very first day they came into the league and I've had many many favorites during that time. I want the Cowboys to win but I watch games to watch my favorite players play. On the other side of the coin there have been Cowboys players that I didn't care that much about but I still want the Cowboys to win. I know there are players on other teams that are good, but I'm not a fan of any of them, because I'm a Cowboys fan.

I liked the plan B FA they initially had. It allowed movement and also allowed teams to keep their own. Kind of like a protected list.
Or they need to expand the franchise / transition player tags. But not an average of the current contracts. Say a fixed % increase after their contract is up. Or something similar.

We may see a trend at some point with QB pay getting adjusted as more and more young QB come in and experience success. Growing up watching the NFL teams would draft a QB and he would sit for a while and you could groom him but now days team need that QB to step in right away and thus we see NFL offenses using more college concepts in their offense than we did before.

I like plan B better than total FA but can't say I liked FA from the get go.

Chances are you are not alone. Im die hard as it gets with Dallas, as a fan from 65 till today I have missed a total of 1 Cowboys game and that was due to a death in the family. I don't miss games even pre season games. Having said that you bet there have been some great names in this organization, guys I looked up to as a kid. I can also say I am a fan of this game and yeah there are guys I loved watching as a kid, guys like Fred Bilentnikoff with the Raiders, Decon Jones with the Rams hell even Mean Joe Green with Pitt and Montana with SF. I respected them because they were great but if they were going up against Dallas believe me 100% backing my Boys. lol
