I think I'd agree to $35 mil per year for whatever number of years both sides agree upon.

I still believe 5 years should have been the contract length that was acceptable last year.

I lean this way as well and would add to the formula time in the league. They already cap the rookies based on draft position. That being said, with the current situation, Dak should get $40 plus based on the fact that he is already set to earn $37 this year then walk. Despite what his plays/skills/playoff record/record against good teams/etc. may or may not show, he is holding $37 million right now and should not give that up to make less.
Oh, Prescott will get paid without a doubt. He must simply pass a physical. I am thinking it will be in the $39 million/year minimum-and-up range. Some people apply meritocracy to veteran professional athletes' contracts but economics is almost always the deciding factor for their compensation.

At this point, I go with the non-exclusive transition tag (I'm not sure of the actual name of it). Is that still an option?

I can't guess at his value any more. I love him behind center for us. I hate holding out for more money when you're already get generation-changing money. So, let him openly negotiate with other teams. If it's way too much, take the two 1sts. We'd find out that we aren't alone in his value...or that we are.

As much as I think he's the guy, I am never been one for exhausting the team salary cap to pay him.

In the end, I want to watch football. I want us to win games. I want to win superbowls. ALL of the contract stuff is stuff I wish was 100% behind the scenes.

At about $27 million, I'd ride with Dak and try to beef up the defense.

Pay him big, and future hope dissolves before our eyes.

It depends on the length of the contract. For 3 years I pay him no more than an avg salary of $35 million. For 6 years I pay him $38 million. For 8 years I would pay him $40 million.

It appears more and more likely that Dak just wants the money, and not to be a Cowboy for life. Mahomes could have got more money, but wanted to remaind a Chief. QB's can play into their 40's as we have seen, so this pay day doesn't have to be the big one. Coming off the injury I surely hope Jerry thinks with his head, and not his heart. As much as I like Dak and think we can win with him, we have also built the offense around him and given him all the weapons to succeed. If this doesn't account for anything than I let him walk, because anything bigger than a $40/year will kill us improving the D, and being able to keep other key parts of the team.

We are now stuck with the going rate which has to be at best 2nd tier qb's...

I put 25-29 mill just because I think I would try to structure my team to win like the Titans or 49ers rather than try to win paying a QB 40 million while the rest of your team suffers.

On a market basis I think Dak is in the 30-35 million range. I would not pay him like a top 5 guy. I don't think he can carry you that far.

I would like to see Dak bet on himself with a deal that pays between 38 to 40 mill with incentives bonus of 2 mill by reaching the SB.

Brady has established the top for me.

How Kansas City and Tampa pay their teams will be instructive.

Well, he apparently wants well over $40 million for three years according to some reports.

I voted for the 25-29 range. Because I realize his poor pocket awareness will cost us at times, with sacks and turnovers. And some of his low arching fastballs will get to the receiver too fast, causing drops.

Dak can't win a ring without a good defense, IMO.

$100 million per year average for 10 years ... because per-year average doesn't really matter.

The focus should always be on guaranteed money. For example, if you gave him a $50 million signing bonus over those 10 years, he'd only be guaranteed $5 million a year. If you further guaranteed another $100 million over five years, that's only $20 million per year. ... So you could technically pay him $25 million per season the first five years, backload his contract with the rest and cut him after five seasons for a dead cap hit of $25 million (the rest of his bonus).

I'm not saying Dak would accept that, just using it as an example that APY is immaterial.

To use a more realistic example, Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450-million deal ($45 million average per year). He won't make $45 million in any year until 2027 when he's scheduled to make $60 million. In fact, his only years making more than $42 million are the last five of his contract. This year, he makes $24.8 million, $31.4 in 2022, $42 in 2023, $40 in 2024 and $42 in 2025 and 2026.
