Give Dak a nonexclusive franchise tag

Yes, and you can't fix the defense paying Dak what he is asking. The Cowboys know they have holes on defense, that is why they were willing to give Dak a lot of money spread out over a longer contract. That will spread the cap money and fix the holes.

We have 4 top 100 picks in this draft. Signing Dak will free space to sign more players than the status quo and it's a buyers market in the first time of forever.

And Dak can pretend like the cap didn't shrink and teams jettisoned his contemporaries with France's media leaks but it is not going to change reality.

That's not upside because your team is worse.
The team is bad now. Giving Dak 40+ million on a shorter contract wont make them better. They had Dak on a rookie contract and they only got one playoff win. If they pay him that kind of money why would people think the Cowboys would get better? They pay Dak what he is asking they will regret it. It would be better to let him test the market. Give him the non exclusive tag and he can try to get a better offer. I don't think he will, but if he does the Cowboys get two firsts.

The cap is going to shrink and without restructure contracts they have around 20 million. That is why the cowboys want a longer contract to spread the cap money. Dak wants a shorter contract so he can come back to the table and get more. If they give Dak what he wants his contract will be a problem not just for the 3 years he wants but then they will have go through it all over again.

If the team is bad with all the savings from the rookie contract, why is the concern that the team is going to be bad with him on a big contract?

Lol such dumb logic.

The market and the price aren't the same thing.

The market is $40. If, say, Chicago came in and said "we'll go to $45," that's now the price. The reason you don't do non-exclusive is because it forfeits all of your control. It's the same as not letting a guy get to UFA before signing him.

Just a really bad idea with a quarterback. 0 upside.

2 first round picks for Dak Prescott seams like phenomenal upside.

Nope. You are making your team worse.

If this is your logic, then nobody should ever get a big contract. Just lead the league in draft picks every year and never have a chance at a title. If you don't have a quarterback, you don't have anything.

Being in the middle around 8-8 is the worst case scenario. It's actually better to have no QB than an overpaid above average QB so we could stock pile top 5 picks for a few years.

Then why am I getting the feeling Jerry is trying like hell to sign Dak? How many free agents do we have leaving this year, 23? Look at who's coming up next year. If they sign Dak, I don't see them being able to surround him with even the talent we have now. Let alone better talent. At least not until the cap starts going up again. What's that, in two the three years? So that's the depressing part.

Well, I'd guess it's because the Cowboys are trying to sign Dak. See, that's the part I don't get about all of this. Just because a person doesn't agree with the money or what have you, doesn't mean you don't want to get a deal done. It's like going out and buying a car, to me. I can take my Wife or my Kids to a lot and they can see a vehicle that they like. But before we ever step onto that lot, I tell them all that you have to be willing to walk away from any deal if it's not a good one. I explained to them early on that if you get into a bad deal, you end up working for your vehicle instead of enjoying it, which is what you envision when you see yourself driving that car, before you buy it. You want this car, you see yourself in it but it's gotta be the right deal or it turns into an anchor. This, IMO, is the same kind of situation we are watching with Dak. I mean, I get it, but I think you are absolutely right. I see no path to improvement if we overspend on Dak. Let me go a step further here and say that when we start seeing the talent that is going to get cut from other teams and those players start taking jobs with other teams for far less then we would ever expect, we are going to kick ourselves even harder over a decision such as that.

I think Jerry wants Dak, he just understands that it's a bad financial deal with regards to the cap.

If you know me you know I watch all the games and evaluate scheme and technique.

25 ppg is top 5 point production. The problem was league worst in giving up points. 36 ppg the defense gave up the first 5 games is awful. You cannot ignore the legion of blown coverages, guys getting blown up by blocks, missed tackles. Gashing runs and long balls were common.

You remember that Cleveland game? Atlanta?

I don't know you anymore then you know me but I know this, I've talked with you for many, many years. I've read your words, engaged you in discussions many times. I know you don't know football. I believe you understand in so far as you watch it and you see what's in front of you. You draw conclusions based on statistics and what you see, you read and listen to various articles, books or interviews but that's different from actually knowing the game. This is not a knock on you. I don't hold this against anybody really. Fact is, very few actually do understand the game because fewer and fewer actually play anymore. Fewer still understand the game well enough to coach it. So no, I don't hold that against anybody, even you. No, what I hold against you is the fact that while you know that what I am saying here is true, you still won't acknowledge it. You actually believe that you are smarter then all those people who actually know and understand the game on a deeper level. Your problem is that you believe you are smarter then everybody else and this goes through every discussion, every opinion, every post you ever make. That's the part that's a bunch of crap with you but hey, why rehash what we've already discussed right? It's not like you don't already know this, you just don't want to admit it and that's what I don't like. I actually admire people who take interest in a thing, get involved and try to learn. People who will engage in discussion and are of a strong mind on opinions. But the thing is, learn from those who can teach a thing. Those are admirable IMO. But that's not what happens with you.

I've asked you many times and you've never ever answered.

That's not a coincidence.

What a load of crap. Acknowledge what? That "I don't know football?" and that you magically do?

That you put yourself on that cross because no one acknowledges it?

Or is the cross because you think I think I am smarter than everyone?

As I said the last time we had this discussion and you were playing martyr, I only think that I'm smarter than you and that's what bothers you.

As for my thinking that I'm smarter than everybody I don't even think in terms like that. I can also attest that there are plenty of people that I think that are smarter than I am in one way or the other because again intelligence is not that simple.

So now that we've addressed your personal attacks in lieu of real argument I will restate how the defense giving up 36 points per game was by far the biggest problem on the Cowboys last season and the causation more so than any other for our losses.

And while I get that you were worked up reliving past angst and writing this post I'm quoting here but next time try paragraphs.

See, you've just proven everything I've said. Brass tac time. Did you ever play or Coach Football?

It's OK, we already know.

Yes.

And all your reduced to is flawed attempts at ad hominem.

By the way probably nobody read your wall of text so have fun proving things in your own head.

OK, so then you understand that Dak's statics, regardless of if they are credible or not, have zero to do with signing him to this contract, correct? You understand why and you can explain it, yes?

Further, your earlier post about his Offensive production vs Defensive production actually supports why you can't pay Dak the money he is apparently demanding. You do understand that, correct?

You understand why your entire argument is about nothing at all because it doesn't translate into winning. If you really understand Football, as you say you do, then you get why all of what I am saying is true and you can explain it. Right?

lol - not a single point if you exclude the fact that you always blame it all on Dak.

If you blamed others, and other factors, you would say Dak is a factor in the team's failures along with others, and other factors, but you don't. You just repeat over and over that Dak is the reason the team has failed.

It's nonsensical to repeat over and over that Dak ruined the team, and is the reason for team failures, then claim that blaming things entirely on Dak doesn't mean you don't blame anyone else.
It has never been just Dak, just like it was never just Romo.
Its a false narrative to ever lay the blame on just a single player.
So I will lay the blame on the culture.

Well I understand is that you've never understood statistics and as such reject them out of hand.

I've tried to discuss with you outliers normalization and other statistical practices and you have no idea on the subject at all whatsoever.

Statistics matter they are a mathematical representation of real life events and as such can quantify and evaluate players on one level. At the same time it should not be the entire evaluation but I've never claimed it should be.

I'm more than comfortable discussing Prescott's play speaking to technique in the like.

You could add coaching - take your pick on personal favorites to point fingers at - and the defense as a whole. Injuries play a part at times, and of course, it's up to the coaches and management to be as prepared for injuries as they can with quality depth on the team.

But people like one stop shopping, so instead of accepting that one stop shopping isn't always possible, they sometimes pick one target to point a finger at. It's not fair minded, but as time goes by I realize more and more that there are a lot of people that don't really have much interest in being fair minded.
