Longhorns Safety: 'I'll Be The Steal Of The NFL Draft'

His biggest deficiencies come as a downhill run filler. His calculations when running the alley and coming downhill as a run defender can be a tick off. As a result, it enables ball carriers to circle the defense and win the corner for explosive plays. While he’s a welcoming tackler, a lack of bulk leads to not much pop behind his pads when he’s unable to build up a head of steam. Sterns’ lack of physicality shows up when deployed as a blitzer. He doesn’t demonstrate much physicality and he makes life easy on blitz pickups from running backs and tight ends. When faced with roadblocks on his path to ball carriers, he struggles to find ways around them in order to reach ball locations.

Sterns ran his 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. He recorded a time of 4.16 seconds in the shuttle. And he got high with a 42-inch vertical leap
Interesting player for how I'd like the Cowboys to approach the Safety position. I want Dallas to come away with a SS and FS from FA/Draft.

Say they sign Keanu Neal and draft Sterns in the 5th. I'm starting in base defense:
FS - Wilson
SS - Neal

Obvious pass downs:
FS - Sterns
SS - Wilson
LB - Neal

I'm not caught up on what player the acquire as much as I like that approach to add more speed in passing situations, and more physicality/toughness on runs downs.

Edit: Sterns would just be a cover FS, not involved much in running situations.

Get me Harris in FA and call it a day instead of trying to fit square pegs in round holes

if we miss out on guys like moehrig, grant, holland, ford or the kid from usc whose name i can't spell....he's one of the guys i like in my 2nd group...with
richard lecounte,georgia
jacoby stevens,lsu
devine diablo,va tech

Sterns is growing on me as a 4th round comp pick or a 5th round pick.

That makes it sound like tackling isn't really the issue, more about angles and getting to the defender. That's where scheme could play into it. What Texas was asking him to do and what the nfl teams will be in alignments and scheme.

I think hes a easy 3rd rounder. That type of athlete doesnt last until 5th round from what I've seen previous years. And its not like he played in a trash conference or division 2

I am all for drafting Sterns day 3. We have the luxury of having extra picks to go after high upside guys in the later rounds.

He may be, but I wouldn't take him that early.

Poor angles, not strong enough, suggests he is poor against the run. He is a day 3 Safety prospect.

no way
A day 3 pick can start next year at LB
I’m not into wasting picks
Sign or draft a teal FS instead of taking flyers

Don’t mind taking him and filling the Darian Thompson role. But no way, do I want him starting next season

Horns fan and it's a pass for me. Watched all of his games.
Coaches loved him and thought he was an incredible practice guy if not the best on the team in practice.
However, in games he was out of position way too often. Chasing players from behind. Never really lived up to his hype.
He should have stayed to play another year
in college.

There's an outside chance he could switch to corner like byron jones and be really good but I don't
remember him covering wideouts or tight ends, so risky pick if that's the plan. Earl Thomas was already elite in college at covering
in the slot as well as playing safety, he could do it all. Sterns not so much.

Some team will probably take him in the 2nd or 3rd based on his speed and football smarts but I'd rather have a handful
of other safeties before Sterns.
