his contract now may make the full five years guaranteed.
I don't believe so although it does make it much more likely, if that makes sense.

If they move on from Cooper after this season, would have a dead money cap hit of $6M ($2M prorated bonus times 3 years remaining on deal). Howwver, if they do it for 5th day of 2022 NFL calendar year, they avoid his $20M base salary in 2022 becoming guaranteed.

2022 cap hit with Cooper on roster is $22M.
2022 cap hit if they cut him before deadline is $6M.

So they gain $16M in cap room but they lose a pretty good WR.

It's also not Jerry's style at all. My guess is he made assurances to Cooper to get him to sign this weird deal when Cooper had better deals on the table.

Okay, same situation but let's go with my hypothetical restructure fro Cooper...

They could give him an $16M restructure bonus, reducing his 2021 cap # to $10M ($4M base salary, $2M previous prorated bonus, $4M prorated restructure bonus). This would free up another $12M in immediate cap room.

2022 cap hit with Cooper is now $26M.
2022 cap hit if they cut him is $18M ($6M in existing prorated bonus, $12M additional restructure bonus). They still gain $8M in cap room (compared to $16M with no restructure).

Again, Jerry makes handshake deals with these guys. Not only do I think the Cowboys convert some of Cooper's $20M this year into bonus money, I think they do it again once Cooper's 2022 $20M base becomes guaranteed.

The kid treats "going for it" as if it comes directly out of his allowance.
He does.

I still think he screams "cap room" from the top of his lungs whenever the on-field team comes up short. He treats it like it's some sort of secret weapon to win football games.

18 million under and we still have moves available. Some of yall need to stop with the narrative we cant build a team after paying Dak. It's just wrong.

We have a defense that needs, IMO, at least seven new starters. We probably need 2 OL, and don't have a backup QB signed yet, Plus we aren't going to get all that in the draft. Last, the draft picks will eat 7-9M or that cap space.

Our cap space is tenuous at best.

what if during the draft a really good wr falls to them at pick 10 could they trade him and free up cap space
Absolutely.

The base salary for 2021 is guaranteed. If a team trades for him, they are taking on that guarantee.

Let's say the Cowboys take Devonta Smith at 10 and the Jets call about Amari Cooper for their 34th pick. The Cowboys would immediately gain $14M in cap room.

previous $22M 2021 cap hit

now accelerate the prorated bonus of $2M times the years remaining on the deal (4) = $8M hit

$22M (old cap #) - $8M (new cap #) = $14M

The $20M guaranteed base salary they are no longer responsible for since the Jets now are going to pay for it.

The only issue is that most impact free agents are gone by late April. So yeah you have cap room but who is that going to get you? Is the player at 34 helping you more this year than Cooper would?

I heard on 105.3 the Fan that Broadus was told by someone in the buying that the cowboys won't be spending much in free agency this year. So let's not get our hopes up.
Can’t spend what you don’t have.

Guess what? no one good wants to play in Dallas anymore either. We ain't making the playoffs.
I agree to a certain degree, but 2 guys would sign if Stephen opens up the pocketbook. Money talks.

Cowboys need CB, S, DT, LB

They should “attack” two starters in free agency and hope they get two starters in the draft.

prediction: they sign 3-4 scrubs instead of bonafide starters and try to convince us they’ll find 4 starters in the draft. Same **** happens every year. Stephen Jones philosophy.

was just wondering if this would get them a young fast wr that they have five years of control over at a much cheaper price

I would think this would only happen if:

A) picks 1 through 9 in the draft go horribly wrong for them

B) can't trade down without paying the Jerry Tax

C) they've already decided Cooper wasn't staying in Dallas after this season

We can bring in some proper players for a change as the $25 million carried over more than pays for Dak.

Other teams will have to let some quality players walk who will be looking for perhaps a one year team friendly deal to stay in the league then get their pay day when the cap increases.

So let's go basically!
