I dont see how its NOT a two year plan. they nail the next two drafts on defense then they set themselves up for years 3 and 4 with Dak as a legitimate window. And guys like Zeke and jaylon come off the books in a year or two years so you will have some nice cap money to spend. Possibly Cooper as well.

An awful defense will go a long way toward having a top ranked offense.

They will be playing from behind quite a bit.
 


According to this tweet, every Super Bowl winner has been between 10th and 26th the previous offseason. Not sure of each season but the Cowboys are 32nd by a wide margin over the last 5 years. Somebody shared an article a couple weeks ago about free agent spending and the Cowboys were so low they were off the charts.
 
I don't think anyone is suggesting the Cowboys spend $100 million in free agency. I think what most of us are saying is that you cannot get better unless you get better players. Signing Dak was great, but even with Dak last year how many games did the Cowboys win? 1, because the Falcons, coached by the new DC, didn't understand the rule about onside kick recovery.

The Cowboys came into this season with two glaring needs from last year (and the year before and the year before that). DT and S. Then because they lost a CB to Free agency they need bodies for the secondary. This draft has CBs, and a couple of safeties in reach with the Cowboys first 2 draft picks. But there are no impact DTs. So would it be asking too much to sign one in free agency who is better than what they already have on the roster? I know I never suggested they go crazy in free agency. I even suggested just signing 1 free agent from outside instead of 5 K-Mart specials.

I think the strategy of building through the draft alone is flawed and cannot possibly work because other teams do play in free agency and they will sign your players away if you cant or wont pay them. If you draft 3 starters a year, and I mean quality starters not just guys that can start for a bad team, in 4 years you have 12 starters. After 4 years, some of your guys are leaving via free agency so the building never ends. The idea of combining all the tools you have to build a roster is not crazy. You draft, trade and use free agency to improve. It is not all of one or the other. The Cowboys simply close off the option of signing free agents. It makes no sense.

On who? The Cowboys will just give LVE and Pollard a 2nd contract and rollover the rest.

This is the issue right here. Even if you hit on draft picks at a solid rate, you are basically just replacing the pieces you lost if you don't get any outside help. You are only treading water, not actually improving.

So only 2 Super Bowl winners in the last 10 spent less than $40 million in free agency.

I'd rather see this presented differently. How many Super Bowl teams have not signed any free agents at least $6 million a year? That's where the Cowboys are at. Now Imagine not signing any free agents for more than $6 million a year while at the same time not using a 1st round pick on a DT since 1991. I know there are no Super bowl teams that have done that because no other team in the league has never drafted a DT in the first round in all those years.
 
I pretty much ignore anything Gil says at this point, he’s so out of touch with todays game and living on his past reputation. He claimed Daniel Jones was the next Peyton Manning, that was the final straw for me.

hopefully just go from bottom 5 to around 15/16 ranked will make huge difference. That goes for the offense as well you want leads Dak and zeke need to stop turning it over as even with dak we were leading the league in TOS last year , has to be limited. Lamb and Gallup drop less balls and yes with that top 3 offense isnt a stretch..

Not sure what defense they were running at the time but Dexter Lawrence was drafted by the Giants in the first round a few years ago. He played DT in college. Leonard Williams also played DT in college but I think he may have ended up playing DE his last year or two.

Not arguing, just more of an FYI.

Right. Every other team in the league has used a 1st round pick on a DT, at least 1. Only the Cowboys have never drafted a DT in the first round.
