Cowboys telegraphing offense in round one?

I've given it some thought and you make a valid point, there are no certainties in the draft. Although Surtain is supposed to have the highest floor and is said to be the most technically sound CB in the draft he could struggle in the NFL. My gut feeling is that he will have early success and Farley could be the one that struggles.

It's easy to fall into that trap. The teams spend lots of money on scouting and I'll bet there are big differences in their big boards.

The Cowboys have shored up DL, safety/linebacker. They went out and signed Neal. They also seem to be “in” on Hooker as a possible signing. That’s a bit more than they usually do.

I think the Cowboys are trying to plug a few holes so that they can go OT or Pitts in round one if the opportunity presents itsself.

Granted these signings don’t contain a corner so they could also be thinking corner at #10 overall.

If Cowboys go BPA we might not see a defender picked until round 3 based on the distribution on talent at where we pick. The value of the #10 pick is probably not going to be a defender.

He and Slater are NFL ready and would start immediately and both would be an instant upgrade and. They are also two positions that are expensive to replace in free agency.

When you ask, which positions can we get a plug and play starter, Corner/OL certainly fit the bill, safety could as well.

Good point, the safety class isn't as strong this year but there are two or three guys in round 2 that could start their rookie year.

I think Moehrig/Grant are day 1 starters, but aren't valued as high 1st rd selections.

I know a lot of people like Grant but my choices would be Moehrig, Johnson, Molden (as a safety), and Holland. Not sure if Holland has the range to play single high though. The last three are pretty good in the slot too.

I don't know which way they're leaning for the draft, but I'd say that I don't think anything they've done in FA to this point influences the pick at #10.

Agreed. Have ways to go to narrow down what we may do in the draft.

They usually tip their cap in FA in where they think their needs are.

We’ve signed a CB, OT, DT and S. I’d imagine they’d go into the draft with the exact same positions as high need.

I don’t think what we’ve done in FA changes anything.

Even after these signings, they're still pretty bad at every level of defense. I doubt they go offense unless a can't-miss player falls to them again this year. I'll probably be upset if they pass on someone like Kyle Pitts to take a defensive player, but not if they're able to flip that pick for something and trade down to fill more holes.

Holland to me is a slot corner, not a safety. Molden is an interesting guy, Quinn has a history of converting corners to safeties. Grant is probably the most rounded safety in the class, where he can play single high or inside the box and isn't a bad tackler like a Moehrig.

I think they are set up well to trade back and pick up another selection in early rounds. BPA may not be the best move draft day. They brought in a bunch of rotational guys, now they need a young cornerstone for that D.

People wanting a defender in round one had better hope we trade back.

• Lacks recovery burst to make up lost coverage distance.
• Too many busts from the UCF secondary as back-end leader.
• Fell victim to coverage confusion near goal line.
• Runs into too many blocks when operating as down safety.
• Needs more consistent hustle to the ball from backside.

There are very few who have the ability to effectively play the single high free safety position. Grant is on that short list. He has shown to have the necessary range/instincts that is required for that position.

I believe Holland is more of that chess piece type of player. I really would like to see how he runs.

Time will tell with Grant but if they draft him in round one or two I would be concerned with the hope of being proven wrong. I would like to get more turnovers on defense and Holland was a ballhawk with nine interceptions in his first two years. If he fell to our third round comp pick or day three he might be hard to pass up.

I just think Grant is a better fit in what we need in Quinn's scheme. Grant did have a 6 interception season in college. Agree, if Holland is there at 75, would be hard to pass up.
