Irrelevant.

What if we trade back, and Najee Harris is the highest ranked player at 20?
Well that is your classic BPA vs Need debate.
I doubt any team in the league drafts totally BPA, so I completely understand your narrative.
Now having said that,, Najee at 44 BPA all day!

The FO job is to acquire the best talent & make it work. If the BPA is clearly an offensive player you have to take them and make the roster work out afterwards (or trade back). Reaching for need has a low success rate. In later rounds, where the grading is more muddled, you can adjust more to need but not in the first round.
Clearly we "need" defensive help but we can't pigeon hole ourselves.

We all know the owner is a follow the ball GM and I certainly can't blame him, I think every owner would be that type of GM. That sells tickets and makes happy fans.

The question is how to use that 1st pick. Make what's good better or what's poor average?

My first inclination is if not now, when? When do they start to fix this defense? Used a 1st on a WR last draft, going to do that again with an OL or TE or even wackier, a WR? They could trade Gallup and use that 10 pick on Waddle or Smith. Do not put that past this WR loving GM.

But that's not the point. Can they accomplish more this season making that offense more potent than bringing that defense up to average? This offense has the signs of being one that can average 30 ppg and all they need to do is keep 10 of their opponents under that to win the East. I do think 10 wins takes it.

So, where I've been all about fixing this D and getting started on that asap, I question whether that is the right approach for this season. And this season is all I am talking about here, not the future, 2021.

This team will ride the offense as far as it can take them so are they better off to make it better and deeper?

I do not think Pitts or Sewell will be there but Slater, Waddle and Smith might be.

Is this a case of a repeat of the 1st in 2020? At 10, there really isn't a D player but there is at least one O player worthy of that pick?

Surtain is the only D player I've seen continually break the top 10 at 10. I think that is because of the perceived need of Dallas for a D player more than where he truly falls on most boards. Are Waddle and Smith better WR's than he is a CB? Slater a better OL than he is a CB?
You worry too much. Over thinking is worst than not thinking at all. I do it all the time. Ask anybody.

:omg:

all can say if you want a team who can compete and have a real chance at a SB you better be good both offense and defense. Does not mean top 5 offense or top 5 defense but it does mean you are not weak in either areas. Right now I do think the Cowboys have the offense to compete but defense must improve a lot if anyone expects to win anything.

You just gotta take the best player at position of need.

Pitts is an exception to the rules because he is a rare talent and you shouldn’t pass on that for some guy who likely has no impact on the outcome of a game like Surtain.

Pitts could be a double digit TD guy consistently as well as providing all kinds of matchup problems.
Not in this offense with Zeke, Gallup, Lamb, Cooper and Pollard, the only benefit is most likely some will be wide open in theory. For him to get that many TDs one of the aforementioned guys get hurt for a good period of time or you decided that your TE will become one of the top 3 options.

Is it really making the OL better if the picks are on the bench?

Or we're putting credible starters on the bench to get the rookie out there?

Williams was a *good*LG last year. McGovern had a solid first season of actual play.

Now I suppose you can always trade a player. I wonder what we'd get for Williams.

We trade Gallup for what, a third round pick, if lucky? As we havent restructured Amari and the Cap situation it's more than likely it would be him that we'd trade/cut....but $20m when there's a number of WR1's in the draft.

We look at long term improvement?? I thought we were trying to win now, that's why we signed Dak?? In 2020 we had a TE that was our joint top comp% (7th in the NFL starting TE's), the marginal improvement has to be offset against the diminishing stagnation of the poor Defensive.

All of this is somewhat immaterial as Pitt's is not going to fall. This isnt like 2020 where the number of available WR's meant there was a chance one of them dropped.

Ive heard the NFL are offering a half price offer to Cowboy's fans where tv coverage just shows Offense and blacks out Defense.

It's the way the fanbase makes an argument, any argument, not to draft Defense (or trade down to draft Defense).

I'd take a 3rd for Gallup's final year and like it.

Much to my disappointment, Pollard was bleh in the passing game. 4.8YPT. That's just sad.

Most coaches go with the guy they know or a veteran vs a younger unproven guy. Williams graded better overall than McGovern on PFF for whatever that is worth, but I think coaches agree with this. I'd be down to trade a starting OT if we draft one in round 1, or if we think McGovern is ready to start go ahead and trade Williams for a defensive player or next years draft pick. I think our FO will let Williams start and finish out his rookie deal, McGovern will backup both guard spots and the center spot.

With a QB that is payed like a top 3 QB you have to go defense.

A great QB can make good or average players around him good to great. So no need to give him more weapons when he already has All-Pros around him.

I'd rather have Sewel but we have to stop ignoring the DEF.

In terms of football operations, It’s more about McClay and Stephen. Jerry is more 3rd party spectator than ever before.

He lets Stephen/McClay run the upfront operations, especially in terms of player personnel acquisition and team salary cap plans and structure.
Jerry’s final say is more of an acceptance to what he has been recommended. So of course he gonna officially side with McClay and Stephen.

Make what’s good better or what’s poor average “ ? … lol,..what the heck does that mean ? .. that sounds more like parables.from David Carradine's " Kung ** " (ok then Grasshopper

And you’re right back to your method idea of bypassing a blue chip to draft a far lessen player just for the sake of reaching for defense. Especially when it comes to this draft class.

Anyway, Would you rather have Lavonn Chassion over CeeDee Lamb right now ?
And that’s figuring in how the club (minus dreaded ex DL coach Tomsula) feels so high about Gregory returning to action and near future starting status.

You don't pass up blue chippers for the sake of getting red-chippers when it's too much of a head and shoulders difference.

Trouble with the OT trade *after* is our decreased leverage. Trouble with *before* is the risk.

Given all the other needs, I wouldn't just take "an" OT, I'd want a player that dropped. In the 1st round, it better be a projected pro bowl caliber LT. I think we have OT covered from starters to developmental players.

I'm with you on all the McGovern/Williams comments. They should let McGovern compete for LG/C, but largely with an eye to preparing him as our first interior backup off the bench. Maybe Looney gets first up at C, but at some point we move on from Looney as 1st up. And could be that McGovern beats out Biadasz at C. Going on last year, McGovern was just the more NFL ready player.

And if we further ignore the D, it'll stink and keep us from the promised land. Then what?

Like I said, the FO will have to evaluate the roster post draft & address what is remaining. Whether they do that well, who knows but first step is getting the best talent available to you in the draft.
