2021 NFL Draft Rumors: Dolphins looking to trade up for second top-ten pick?

usa_today_12589570.0.jpg

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins have already been busy in the 2021 NFL Draft, trading out of the third position, back to the 12th spot, then back up to the sixth-overall pick. Rumors over the past few days have the Dolphins considering another trade, with the common though that Miami could trade back to add additional picks either this year or in 2022. Now, however, there is some speculation that Miami could be looking to trade up, but not from the sixth spot, but rather from their second first-round pick, the 18th-overall selection.

Dolphins currently own the (1st round) 6th, 18th and (2nd round) 50th overall picks (in RED) within the first 2 rounds.

The Cowboys own the (1st round) 10th and (2nd round) 44th overall picks (in GREEN) within the first 2 rounds.

If the Cowboys and Dolphins agreed to make a trade:

Dolphins move up from the 18th pick and get the Cowboys 10th overall pick, the Cowboys would move down 8 spots and get the Dolphins 18th overall pick while also getting the Dolphins 50th overall pick. Those 2 picks (18th & 50th) would equal the trade value (700 points difference) to trade away the 10th overall pick to the Dolphins. That would move the Cowboys down 8 spots in the 1st round, but it would also give the Cowboys another mid-2nd round pick, thus giving them 2 picks in every round (2nd, 3rd & 4th rounds) while still having a pick in the teens in the 1st round (Cowboys have snatched up great players in the teens spot in the 1st round in the past).

Would you rather stay put and only have 1 pick to use in each first 2 rounds, or would you make the trade down while still getting a 1st round pick in the teens while grabbing an extra mid-2nd round pick, thus securing 2 picks in each round (2nd, 3rd & 4th rounds)?

Lots of holes to fill on this team, especially Defense.

What say you? Should the Cowboys trade down a few picks in the 1st round while gaining an extra mid-2nd round pick or stay pat?

For me it would depend on who’s left on the board when pick 10 comes up.

If Pitts, Sewell, and Surtain are all gone? I’d consider it.

You only make that trade if they also throw in a number 1 in 2022.

Dallas doesn't need more draft picks this year. The 10 draft picks aren't making the team. It's a wasted effort.

I say consolidate the 10 picks to trade up later in the draft. If Dallas doesn't select any players on day 3 it would be fine.

Blogging The Boys had an article breaking down how well Dallas drafted each day and the drop off on day three was extreme.

If I can get Ojulari at 18 I’d do it but since there is no way to guarantee he’ll be there I’d pass. Dallas may not even have 18 first round grades

Now, think about this, though.... Do you trust the Cowboys scouting department? The ones who picked Diggs, Gallimore in rounds 2 and 3 last year. Wouldn't you want them to get another shot at players in those round 2 and round 3 talent levels?

At 18, Dallas could get Farley, or JOK, or Newsome, each tremendous picks. I'd go with filling the CB spot there, with such a talent drop after that.

Then they could also use the ammo to trade up to the top of the second to get one of the 2 best remaining linebackers, Collins or Bolton. LB Talent dropoff after that is a sheer cliff!

Then, with the other pick in the 2nd, address safety position with Richie Grant, or if we got JOK, take the DT with Marvin Wilson, then hope for ArDarius Washington later in round 3.

All in all, some really good players in the 2nd round, and some left in the 3rd as well. It's a good good thing to trust the Cowboys scouting department. ESPECIALLY in a year where the combine was not centrally located. Lots of inflated times out there without standardization, so your scouts work is all the more important. Jerry needs to be at the yacht again.

Would you rather have Pitts or Barmore and Newsome? Easy easy answer for me.

As long as the value is there I’d do it. You’re probably looking at a Barmore/Farley/ maybe parsons? I’d take that plus extra picks. They would have the firepower to move back into the back end of the first if you wanted to grab Collins/leatherwood/rousseau/moehrig.

I would do it for the 36th, not the 50th. I would even be willing to throw in a 6th or 5th.

Take Barmore. Quickest route to fixing the defense is at DT. Then go CB S LB OT. Not necessarily in that order. Any sort of contribution from rookies on defensive side of the ball and an O-Line that isn't decimated gives us a chance to compete this season. Re-enforcing the O-Line is more important than some seem to thin.

Also, is there any chance Farley drops out of the first completely?

Absolutely not. I didn't suffer through that awful season just for us to pick in the middle of the draft AGAIN, except we get an extra Jerry Jones gamble pick. It'd be like we've essentially had another 8 and 8 season

We've already had the shotgun approach in free agency last year and that was AWFUL. Which one of those guys are being retained for this year? The kicker? I'd much rather get one franchise cornerstone than a couple of guys that only fill one contract and they're out of here.

Last time we picked 18, we grabbed Bobby Carpenter. The year before that, at pick 11 we grabbed Demarcus Ware.

Since 2010, our second rounders have been like: Sean Lee, Bruce Carter, Gavin Escobar, Demarcus Lawrence, Randy Gregory, Jaylon Smith, Chidobe Awuzie, Connor Williams, Trystan Hill, and Trevon Diggs.

Demarcus Lawrence is the only real consistent, standout player. Sean Lee is immensely talented, but has missed a TON of time. Jaylon Smith had 1 great year, but since then, has never lived up to his potential. Bruce Carter was ok at one point and then went somewhere else. Escobar was completely wasted. Randy Gregory showed flashes, but has hardly ever been on the field. Awuzie was ok at best here. Trystan Hill has done nothing of note. Trevon Diggs has shown flashes of potential. In the third round, we grabbed a couple of nice offensive skill guys like Gallup and Murray.

No. Zip, zero, nada.
They want 2 top ten picks because they want quality. They get silver dollars and we get a pocket full of pennies.
Thanks but no thanks. I want that #10 pick.

Totally Agree, Dolphins want the #10 pick they need to pay a Premium...dont care what the Chart value says,....the drop in talent is just to much. No Way....

The Cowboys were a HORRIBLE team in 2020...No Talent on the Defense...they need talent not more role players.

I say NO. Most of the "bluechippers" are at the top of the draft. We have 10 picks. use the extra 3rd and 4th picks and your 2nd to move up to the bottom of the 1st round to get a 2nd player with a 5th year option. We don't have a recent history of "coaching" up later round draft picks anyway.

Well Said

Bingo, Its like drafting DeMarcus Ware (11th) vs Chidobe Awuzie (60th). One will be a HOF and the other a JAG who now plays for Cincy

Every single counter offer in here is a joke and none of them would be accepted
