How do you feel about the Parsons pick

I have mixed feelings.

1. I think LB is a low cost position so don't like investing a top 10 pick
2. I think Parsons is the best defensive player in the draft
3. Every mock I did that was any good involved trading down to 13, 14, or 15 and taking Parsons.

The guy is an exceptional pass rusher, the most reliable LB I have seen in getting off blocks, filling his gap, and making the tackle. The flip side is he hasn't spent time in coverage and I don't know how long it's gonna take for him to develop this area of his game. I would have taken a corner if there 100% but I was not in favor of trading up so what you gonna do?

Agree and he was picked at 12 and you get pick 84.

He wasn't my first choice, for sure. I prefer a sure thing.

But he was arguably the top defensive player in the draft and unquestionably a playmaker and a fighter that our defense sorely lacks.

6 months ago when we were looking at a top 5 pick, everyone wanted Parsons. The draft season shone maybe a little too much light in his weaknesses, and we all got maybe a bit too obsessed over CB

Great pick, and I was ready to be disappointed. What's not to like, good value, ranked 6th overall, upgraded the front seven including our pass rush, added a third round pick, and got some "speed and energy" as MM called it on defense.

I wouldn’t take this player in the first round because I think he is too raw.

I’m not risking a pick on a linebacker who doesn’t come into the league showing the ability to cover. That’s something you need to find out when they are in college to validate a first round pick. Especially a top 15 pick.

It could work out. He’s raw and has athleticism but they will look like fools and people should be fired if we find out he has no coverage ability at this level.

He’s shown an ability to cover, but as a great downhill player for a college program wasn’t asked to do so much of it. Has the tools though and that’s what coaches are for in the NFL.

I give this pick the CeeDee Lamb treatment. If he was truly the best player they available then they should have taken him. Taking the Eagles third rounder and sticking it to the Giants while getting the player they would have taken at 10 was a pretty sweet bonus.

Lol, indeed. But other than 2020 Smith started at least 13 games per year and maybe surgery and time away was what was needed. However, they must be able to function to a certain degree and we didnt need a pick and play 1st round. Think we'll draft a couple of back-up, developmental types (Trey Hill/Hudson/Christensen), that can learn behind Smith until he drops.

Im sure sure we dont go to war with Steele and Knight as back-ups......having to undrafted guys kind of indicated we were caught on the John.

Yep, same here. But the more I look the better I like the pick. It's the improvement over replacement....Mr Smith we've got you your own allocated bench position.

I also like the versatility- improved pass-rush and run blocking. In the hands of a talented DC, he's a weapon who's talents can be utilized in many different ways.

The 3rd round pick is so valuable this year.... that means day 2 we can look at: DT, S, CB and a projectable/backup O-Lineman or Edge....someone that learns from the established starters.

What's not to like:
- we got our man (if we didnt like him i'm sure we could of drafted down again).
- we got the BPA
- we addressed a need (unless you're related to Jaylon).
- we improved two aspects of the game - pass-rush and run defense.
- we got a difference maker....a headlight reel.
- we didnt reach
- we got the number 84, in a draft that's deep on good match-ups.

The taking of Parsons over a CB is one thing, but they were gone, we played what was in front of us....well done FO.

Yep, that's how I read it. The guy is so versatile. I bet Quinn was all in for it.

Who’s the bust?

Who’s the player they wasted significant investment in?

#34 overall pick Jaylon Smith? He of the huge second contract?

2018 1st round pick Leighton Vander Esch?

Or Parsons himself?

Which of these three huge investments is not on the field enough to justify the cost?

It’s going to be one of them because this league no longer plays a game where you line up three linebackers a large percentage of the time.

And I don’t even have to mention Keanu Neal fo I? Reportedly set to play weak side linebacker?

So the Cowboys can NEVER get the return on investment from what they’ve put into the position.

I don’t hate the player, I hate poor decision making.

Plans dont always work out as scripted, a good organisation is able to maneuver with the changing environment.

@timb2 made a good point when I asked him why he picked Parsons in his mock. He said he raises the energy of the whole defense. I loved the bear hug he gave the commissioner when the pick was announced.
