Lookit, I wasn't enamored with taking corners at #10. Optimally, there would be a DT or edge worth that slot, and they go with that position. When the corners weren't there (and I wasn't the least bit upset), to me, a trade back was the best option. Taking another offensive lineman would indicate a problem where this team cannot get a good offensive line without wallpapering the group with first round picks. It would also continue to discrepancy in spend between the offense and defense.
This draft has and had huge positional holes in it - no elite edge rushers, no dominant interior defensive linemen, no true ballhawks at corner. The Cowboys may have had two trade down options. One, we know, and they took it - getting another Day 2 pick to move down two slots. The other, we can only assume, was to trade down to the Bears slot, and get a first rounder next year. I would have done the second rather than the first, but we will never know. With what we know, and what they ended up doing, they took the best on-field player on the board. Parsons, if the stars align and he fully develops, can be a versatile monster in this defense. He can rush the passer, make plays sideline to sideline and be effective against the run. He's not fully developed, but he has physical traits that can't be taught. His immaturity is a real concern, but hopefully being a father makes him grow up. He certainly won't be given the tough love necessary in Dallas with Uncle Jerry in charge.
I'm less concerned about the previously sunk cost in LVE and Jaylon Smith. That watch can't be unwound. Those picks were not worse than Taco Charlton, but clearly they didn't work out. This defense has resembled a donut for years. This is one pick to fill the hole down the middle. Not the position I wanted, but it wasn't a bad selection, hence my indifference.
